John Fury brands Tyson Fury trainer ‘useless’

John Fury has doubled down on his criticisms of Tyson Fury’s long-time trainer SugarHill Steward.

Fury Sr has previously called for his son to sack Steward and has once again slammed the American trainer.

‘The Gypsy King’ is preparing for his comeback against Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Robert McInnes, known as ‘Sifu’, while Steward, who has trained him for six years, has also apparently joined the camp in Thailand.

In a bombshell interview, in which he claimed his relationship with his son has been “destroyed”, Fury branded Steward “useless” in a scathing attack on the nephew of renowned coach, Emmanuel Steward.

“At the beginning I thought it was going to be me and Sifu,” the 60-year-old told Playbook Boxing.

“I said, ‘if you have him, SugarHill, I’m gone.’

“I knew he was in the background.

“He’s no good. Tactically he’s useless.

“Everybody he’s been in the corner with he’s got beat.

“Muhammad Ali’s grandson had him, he fired him down the road.

“Ben Whittaker had him. He got an unbeaten Canadian. The kid was 15-0, went with Sugar and he got knocked out.

“The man does nothing.”

Fury will fight for the first time since a second straight loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024.

The 37-year-old announced his retirement last January, but made a sensational U-turn earlier this year.

The Morecambe man remains hopeful of landing a long-awaited showdown with fellow former two-time heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua later this year.

Joshua’s future has been uncertain since he was involved in a fatal car crash in Nigeria in December, which took the lives of two of his close friends and left him with minor injuries.

The 36-year-old returned to training camp in Spain this week and his promoter Eddie Hearn says he could come back in July.

Reports emerged this week that an agreement is in place for Fury and Joshua, although Hearn has denied this.

“It’s completely untrue,” Hearn told The Stomping Ground.

“There is absolutely nothing signed with Anthony Joshua to fight Tyson Fury next.

“There is nothing agreed.
