Johnnie Jackson was ‘fuming’ as AFC Wimbledon go seven league games without a win, following a 3-1 defeat to Northampton.
Conor McCarthy headed the Cobblers in front from a corner in the 10th minute, but Marcus Browne levelled six minutes later after Northampton’s defensive error.
The hosts were in full control with Cameron McGeehan netting twice in the second half—first volleying home five minutes after the restart, then finishing from McCarthy’s flick-on—to pick up all three points.
Ahead of the rest of the weekend’s action, Northampton sit 10th in league One with 27 points from 20 games played, while Wimbledon are 11th the same points and games played.
Johnnie Jackson said, per the club website: “Really annoyed. Fuming, to be honest. All our own doing.
“We conceded three goals from set-pieces. We spoke about not giving fouls away that could allow them to put pressure on us in our penalty box. We give a foul away, start of the second-half, the ball comes in our box, they score. Then another foul, and it goes in our box and they score again.
“So, the fouls, not defending the set-piece, not winning first contacts, not winning second contacts, has cost us because take that out, take that 20 minutes and the start of the second-half and I think we’re the dominant team in most of that.
“But I’m not worried about being the dominant team if you’re going to go and give three goals away from set-pieces and lose.
On the leveller: “Great response. Even before that, I thought we were playing good football. We’ve been trying to have more possession, more control in games.
“We’ve done that. But we give a foul away, ball comes in our box, leads to a corner and they score. They go 1-0 up when there’s been nothing in the game.
“In fact, we’re probably in a better moment, but they get their goal, we respond brilliantly, we score. And then we look like we’re going to go on and get another. I think they (Northampton) wanted half-time.
“We’ve created more tonight than we have in a while, in fairness. But we lose a game 3-1. So, we’ve got to be better at that. It doesn’t matter what level you’re playing at here. You see it in the Premier League now with long throws and set pieces. You go and watch a National League South game tomorrow, it’ll be the same. Games are decided on things like that.”
On the fans: “We thank them for that (clapping us off at the end). My team are never going to lose a game because they’re not trying. But it’s not enough. We’re not here to just run around and try hard. We have to be better than that. We want to establish ourselves as a League One team.”
Northampton’s Kevin Nolan said, per the club website: “I thought we were well worthy of the win tonight,” he said.
“We started really well and got the early goal. We then went into a bit of a self-destruct mode and I had to change things around a little bit earlier than I would have liked.
“I wasn’t too happy at half-time with the amount of balls we turned over and battles we’d lost in the first half and that’s why I put Kamarai Swyer on to try and get at them a little bit.
“I asked them to be a bit more aggressive in the second half and they did a lot better. It wasn’t a great spectacle but I’m really please for the fans to get that win before Christmas.
“Cam was in the right place at the right time for his two goals, it’s something we work a lot on and I’m delighted for him. We got three goals from set pieces tonight and that is a reward for all the work we put in.
“We want to win games at Sixfields, Wimbledon are not an easy team to come up against and I’m delighted to take the three points tonight.
“We took it on the chin at half-time and I’m delighted we came out in the second half to win the game.
“We’ve got a squad now where we can make changes, Tyrese Fornah has just felt a little something in his abductor and that’s why we left him out tonight. He’s played more minutes than anyone and he will benefit from the rest.
“This is an important win for us tonight but we want to back it up now at Burton.”
Here’s how fans reacted with Johnnie Jackson ‘fuming’ as AFC Wimbledon go seven league games without a win…
@DonsOnTour: We are fucking dreadful at anything, reevesy is shite, defence is non existent, set pieces are an embarrassment. 3 hour journey to watch a bunch of overpaid cunts run around for 90 minutes, every week it’s the same shit
@adamhodsoll: Another relegation battle 👍🏻 what a load of shit that was
@charlieehurd: Fucking play forward attacking football
@Class1Mod: Shocking defending. Harbottle for Ogs please and if Lewis/Johnson repeat tonights shit show get Bauer and Hutch in
@StephenJAdams: Dog shit again.. should have stayed at home. Awful
@Gary_M_Wilkes: Well, we played spells of good football but again, we move the ball too slow and our passing isn’t very accurate. We need livening up, not sure how though without money! 🤷♂️
@awimbledon24: Nkeng HAS to start against Stevenage
@reilyjf: Poor stuff indeed. Can’t defend, can’t score goals. Problem is I fear we are just not good enough. Over performed getting promoted last season but we struggle to be competitive over a long season in L1. Feel we are headed back down.
@BrooklynDon6: We’re losing to teams below us and getting outplayed. Our crosses go straight to the oppo keeper and we’re losing out when balls come into our box. We are looking like what was predicted for us at the start of the season.
@reesefletcher_: Dreadful performance again. We are back to the normal Wimbledon. Losing these types of games. Slow passing and awful defending. Northampton had to do nothing to break us down, and they scored three. Stevenage won’t be pretty. Take me back to the start of season #afcw
@marcsm08: In all genuine seriousness what the hell has happened we actually look like the worst side in the league #afcw
@MyLifeFC23:
*goes long* – Northampton win the header
*goes long* – Northampton win the header
*goes long* – Northampton win the header
*goes long* – Northampton win the header
Same tactic. Same outcome. When will JJ watch what’s happening and change it?
Wimbledons winless run continues
Always gonna be hard when your wage budget is significantly smaller than others
Always going to be frustrating when you should get something out of a game against certain teams(tonight, Burton, Exeter)
Just have to keep backing JJ#afcw pic.twitter.com/gVAQD9E66V
