MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has joined a list of global sporting icons as it has been announced that the Spaniard is a nominee for the 2026 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
Marquez, who regained the MotoGP throne in 2025 after an astonishing comeback from injury, joins the likes of Max Verstappen, Lionel Messi and Usain Bolt who are all previous nominees and winners of the award.
Athletes are selected from a wide variety of sports based upon their achievements, and Marquez will be up against the likes of fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, France’s Ousmane Dembele and Italy’s Jannick Sinner.

The Ducati man has previously been nominated for the award on several occasions and won the 2013 ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ award after his incredible rookie title-winning campaign.

Marquez reacted to the annoucement by saying: “This is my sixth nomination for the Laureus World Sports Awards – but I still get that same buzz that I felt receiving my first one, 12 years ago!

The quality of the Nominees goes to show how special the Awards are, and I’m delighted to be shortlisted amongst such prestigious company.

The 2025 season was truly a statement from Marc Marquez, who dominated the championship from the very opening round and amassed a total of 11 race wins and 14 sprint wins throughout the year.

The award ceremony and winners announcement will take place on 20 April in Madrid, Spain, making it the ideal setting for Marquez to be crowned with another honour.
