In a rare turn of events, former South African cricketer JP Duminy took to the field during the third ODI between South Africa and Ireland in Abu Dhabi. Duminy, who serves as the white-ball batting coach for the Proteas, filled in for fatigued players towards the end of Ireland’s innings. The heat and humidity of Abu Dhabi had taken a toll on some players, prompting Duminy’s unexpected return to action.
Duminy’s Electric Fielding
The incident unfolded during the final over of Ireland’s innings. Duminy, who retired from professional cricket in September 2017, surprised fans and players alike when he stepped onto the field. He displayed remarkable agility while fielding a shot from Ireland’s Harry Tector.Â
As Tector attempted a reverse hit off a length ball from Phehlukwayo, he managed only a top-edge. Duminy quickly moved to his left at short third and executed a brilliant dive to stop the ball, proving he still possesses impressive skills on the field.

Ireland’s Competitive Performance
As for the match itself, Ireland delivered a strong batting performance, posting a competitive total of 284 runs for 9 wickets. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, captain Paul Stirling got off to an excellent start. He scored 88 runs off 92 balls, featuring eight fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, partner Andrew Balbirnie struggled initially but found his rhythm as he contributed 45 runs off 73 balls.
Ireland’s innings saw contributions from several players. Campher added a quick 34 runs off 36 balls before being dismissed by Ottneil Baartman. After Stirling and Campher fell in quick succession, wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker and young talent Harry Tector worked together to stabilize their innings. Tucker scored 26 runs off 28 balls before losing his wicket.
The Irish innings concluded at 284 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, with Phehlukwayo and Williams performing admirably in the death overs. Williams, in particular, impressed with a remarkable four-wicket haul, stifling Ireland’s momentum and helping South Africa maintain their competitive edge.
