The FGC was shocked when Kakeru ‘Kakeru‘ Watanabe announced his retirement from Street Fighter esports in October 2026. Now, the fighting game veteran has revealed his upcoming career goals.

Kakeru had an impressive career in Street Fighter, including his $1 million Capcom Cup 11 victory in 2024. However, he slowly faded from the competitive scene the following year and eventually announced his retirement due to serious health issues.

At the time of his retirement, Kakeru stated: “The team and I have carefully discussed the possibilities for continuing my activities in the future, but I judged that it would be difficult to continue as a player.

“I will leave ZETA Division by the end of the year and will focus on recovering my health going forward.”

Unfortunately, Kakeru is still not planning to attend the Capcom Cup 12 tournament. Instead, he has plans to focus on his hobbies and interests outside of Street Fighter.

In an X post, Kakeru explained that he’s been spending his time reading books and ‘doing research.’ He has found himself thinking back to his ‘professional days’ and wanting to try new things.

When it comes to Street Fighter, Kakeru noted that he will ‘enjoy Street Fighter 6 as a single player from here on out.’

“If it turned into work, it wouldn’t align with the way of engaging that I truly value,” he added. “I’ll resume streaming once things settle down, but I also have no plans to make streaming my livelihood.”

Kakeru knew that this revelation could upset some fans who were hoping he’d make a comeback. However, fans applauded Kakeru for chasing his dreams and passions. Sometimes life and priorities change, and fans told Kakeru to focus on whatever changes lie ahead for him.
