Kerala all-rounder on the cusp of rare Ranji Trophy record

The Kerala all rounder Jalaj Saxena did what he does best by helping his team when they were in trouble. Kerala was struggling at 78 for five when Saxena came in to bat. However, he seemed calm and confident, and his strong innings of 84 helped Kerala set a solid first innings score against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 24/25, Elite Group C match.

Following his innings of 84 against Bengal, he reached 6,000 runs in the Ranji Trophy. He became the first player in the tournament’s history to score 6,000 runs and take more than 300 wickets, with a total of 395 wickets.

Previously, he ranked second among players who scored over 5,000 runs and took more than 300 wickets. The first was Madan Lal, who scored 5,270 runs and took 351 wickets. The closest player to achieving both 6,000 runs and 300 wickets was Vijay Hazare, who scored 6,312 runs and took 291 wickets. Now, Jalaj is the only player who has scored over 6,000 runs and taken over 300 wickets in the Ranji Trophy.

Jalaj Saxena is on the verge of achieving another record

Jalaj Saxena is on the verge of achieving another record, currently sitting at 395 wickets. If he takes 5 more wickets in the Ranji Trophy, he will become the only player to have scored over 6,000 runs and taken 400 wickets in the tournament. He is arguably one of the best all-rounders in Ranji Trophy history.

Jalaj Saxena began his career by debuting for Madhya Pradesh in 2005. During his time in the Ranji Trophy with Madhya Pradesh, he scored 4,041 runs and took 159 wickets before moving to Kerala in 2016. Despite his strong domestic performance, the 37-year-old has not yet had the chance to play for his country. He played in the IPL for Punjab Kings, appearing in just one match in 2021. Prior to that, he represented the Mumbai Indians in the Champions League T20 in 2014-15, where he played three matches.
