On Monday, former English cricket team captain Kevin Pietersen expressed outrage over the resignation of Gary Kirsten as the head coach of Pakistan’s one-day cricket outfits, which then caused him to post on X. This former South African batsman, who was the head coach of the Indian cricket team when it won the World Cup, most recently joined the Pakistan team in April 2024 as the white-ball head coach, a position that lasted for only six months.
There were reported issues with him and some players in the Pakistan team, as well as his displeasure with the recent developments in Pakistan cricket.
The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) took to X on Monday to inform its audience about Gary Kirsten’s resignation and announced that Australia’s Test head coach Jason Gillespie will be in charge of managing the team for the forthcoming white-ball series in Australia.
Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted.
Kevin Pietersen whose records make him one of the finest English batsmen in history was apparently shocked by the report about the resignation of Gary Kirsten. He did not spare the criticism towards Pakistan cricket for letting go of the legend.
“How can Pakistan Cricket lose Gary Kirsten’s with his resume in coaching? One step forward the last few weeks and two steps back today! Stop doing it to yourselves. Too much talent to keep doing this kind of stuff!”
As per the reports coming in from Pakistan, former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is said to be the frontrunner for the post of head coach of the white-ball teams of Pakistan. If everything goes to plan, he will assume responsibility of the team’s management after the Zimbabwe tour.
Having completed a series of three ODIs and T20Is in Australia, Pakistan next heads towards Zimbabwe to engage in three ODIs and a three-match T20I series scheduled for November December period and later woes with South Africa in three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests
The upcoming Australia tour will see Mohammad Rizwan leading the side for the first time in his capacity as a captain of the Pakistan white ball teams. In his absence, Salman Ali Agha who was the captain of the 2009 T20 World Cup winning team will lead the team in the three match T20I series against Zimbabwe in December.
