Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered another major setback ahead of IPL 2026, with Akash Deep ruled out of the entire season due to a lower-back stress injury.
“Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a significant setback ahead of IPL 2026, with fast bowler Akash Deep officially ruled out of the tournament due to a lower-back stress injury.”
The pacer needs at least three more months to return to competitive cricket. He skipped KKR’s pre-season camp and continued rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
“With his rehabilitation extending longer than expected, the franchise confirmed that the pacer will miss the entire IPL 2026 season, leaving a noticeable gap in their Indian pace resources.”
This injury adds to KKR’s growing fast-bowling worries. Harshit Rana is also likely to miss the season, while Matheesha Pathirana is expected to be unavailable for the early matches.
KKR had already signed Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman. Now, they may have to rethink their bowling plans once again before the season begins.
At present, the main Indian pacers available are Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, and Kartik Tyagi. All three have potential, but lack consistent experience in high-pressure roles.
Cameron Green can offer a few overs of seam bowling, but he is not a full-time fast bowler. This puts extra pressure on the remaining attack.
KKR have started trialling more Indian fast bowlers to fill the gap left by injuries. The team management is keen to add depth before the tournament kicks off.
The weak pace attack could hurt KKR in the early matches. Powerplay and death overs remain key concerns as the team looks to stay competitive.
With multiple setbacks in a short span, KKR now face a tough task to rebuild their bowling unit and stay in the playoff race.
