KL Rahul Should Sit Out If Gill is Fit

A poor showing by KL Rahul in the opening Test against New Zealand – he scored 0 and 12 in the two innings – has once again opened a new debate in the context of the role he is to play in the playing XI. Opining on the issue with ESPNCricinfo, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar says if Shubman Gill, who was suffering from neck stiffness, can overcome it, he should replace KL Rahul in the second Test. Importance and confidence, according to Manjrekar, go hand in hand with form, and a poor run would actually point towards a change in that regard.

With KL Rahul not being able to give consistent performances, his Test average since 2022 stands at 25.70. He has had initial success as an opener but Manjrekar believes that Rahul might have to be used at number three if Gill doesn’t return soon, as a change might “free him up a bit.”

Virat Kohli’s Batting Position Under Scrutiny

Another aspect which was discussed by Manjrekar pertains to the batting position of Virat Kohli. Kohli has a record of 23.85 after batting at number three in 5 Tests, which is low when compared to his average at number four. At number four, for instance, Kohli has scored 7355 runs at an average of an impressive 52.53. Manjrekar stressed that Kohli ought to go back to his normal position in case Gill is alright because it is very important for the star batter to regain his rhythm.

Shifting Kohli back to number four has the potential of enhancing his morale and, at the same time, solidifying India’s middle order. team should be able to strike a composition where both players are accommodated allowing India to be in a better position in the coming Test.

Washington Sundar Added to the Squad

To bolster their squad, India has brought in Washington Sundar for the second Test. Sundar has been in outstanding form during the Ranji Trophy, where he scored an impressive 152 for Tamil Nadu. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball adds significant value to India’s team, particularly with key players like Shubman Gill unavailable.

Sundar’s addition provides India with the option of a versatile all-rounder who can bat at number three or in the lower middle order. With Gill’s fitness still in question, Sundar’s presence offers much-needed flexibility, and his current form could play a crucial role in India’s efforts to recover against New Zealand.
