SRH have opted to go for big budget retentions to ensure the retention of last season’s star performers ahead of IPL 2025 retention deadline.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are making bold strides in shaping their roster for the IPL 2025 season, with a retention strategy that has sparked considerable excitement among fans. As the IPL’s retention deadline draws near, SRH’s approach shows how much they are valuing continuity, ensuring they retain their most valuable assets while also preparing to enter the auction with a robust plan.Â
Here are the major developments coming in from SRH as we head into the IPL 2025 Retention Deadline on October 31:
Heinrich Klaasen as Top Retention for INR 23 Crores
Heinrich Klaasen has emerged as the top retention for SRH, secured for a reported INR 23 crores. The South African wicket keeper-batter has been one of SRH’s standout performers in the last two seasons, accumulating over 400 runs in each of the last two seasons at a strike rate exceeding 170, making him a critical player against both spin and pace.Â
His batting prowess, especially in the middle order, has strengthened SRH’s lineup, justifying this high retention value. His retention also reflects the franchise’s reliance on Klaasen as a linchpin for stabilizing and accelerating their innings.
Pat Cummins and Travis Head as Second and Third Retentions
SRH captain Pat Cummins holds the second retention slot at INR 18 crores. Cummins led SRH to the IPL finals last season and also picked up 18 wickets, showing his importance as both a leader and a top bowler. His consistent performance throughout the season has made him an invaluable asset, both on the field and in mentoring the younger bowlers on the team.

Travis Head, another key Australian retained by SRH, comes in as the third choice for INR 14 crores. Known for his dynamic batting and ability to give explosive starts at the top of the order, Head had a stellar season in 2024. He amassed over 500 runs with a strike rate that soared above 190.Â
His synergy with fellow opener Abhishek Sharma contributed significantly to SRH’s successes last season, making his retention essential for maintaining the team’s explosive starts.
Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Kumar Reddy as Fourth and Fifth Capped Retentions
SRH’s fourth retention slot is held by Indian all-rounder Abhishek Sharma. Je is a powerful left-handed opener who has consistently delivered, supporting SRH with rapid starts alongside Travis Head. Known for his hard-hitting ability, he brings depth to SRH’s batting order and fills a critical role as a domestic talent in the team lineup. The youngster amassed 484 runs in IPL 2024 at a strike-rate of over 200.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, a promising young all-rounder, is SRH’s fifth retention. Reddy made an impact with both bat and ball in the last two seasons, establishing himself as a versatile player who can adapt to multiple roles.Â

While he was initially acquired as an uncapped player, his India debut and impressive performances for the national team recently has earned him a spot as a capped retention.Â
As far as their retention values go, CricXtasy has learnt that their retentions won’t be at the stipulated values of INR 18 and 14 crores for fourth and fifth retentions respectively. In fact, SRH has come to terms with them to retain them for much lower values to keep the stipulated combined sum of INR 75 crores for five retentions in tact.Â
As they are already retaining Klaasen, Cummins, and Head for a combined sum of 55 crores, Abhishek and Nitish are supposedly getting retained for a combined 20 crores. Their actual retention values will be available in the next couple of days.
SRH Not Retaining Any Uncapped Players
Interestingly, SRH is likely to not retain any uncapped players for the 2025 season, focusing instead on players with proven IPL experience. This approach aligns with their strategy to maximize reliability and performance under pressure, a shift from prior seasons where they invested in potential over experience.

The franchise may be aiming to use its auction resources to acquire emerging talent from the uncapped pool, thus ensuring they have room to introduce fresh faces without compromising on core stability.
SRH Heading into the Auction with One RTM and Possible Auction Purse of INR 45 Crores
After finalizing their top five retentions, SRH heads into the IPL 2025 auction with a Right to Match (RTM) card and an estimated purse of INR 45 crores. This RTM card grants SRH the flexibility to retain an additional player if they deem it necessary during the auction, potentially targeting a former team member or a high-value new addition.
With a balanced core and a substantial auction purse, SRH has positioned itself well for tactical acquisitions. They are likely to focus on securing specialist bowlers or a finisher to round off their squad. This approach not only offers stability but also leaves room for fine-tuning the team based on evolving auction dynamics and opposition strengths.
