The new top dog for e-bike hauling
I’ve been lucky to review a handful of Küat products over the years, and I am consistently impressed by their quality. There’s a lot of variation in bike racks, even within the same high price point, but Küat consistently feels very polished. That’s true for the Piston Ion, too: lots of sculpted aluminum, bespoke parts and just a single segment of standard 2″ steel piping to go into the receiver. Everything else: custom made.
I reviewed the Piston Pro X shortly after it came out, and basically named it the top dog of hitch racks. The Piston Ion is very much bred from the same stock, but adapted for large and heavy bicycles. For starters, assembly is straightforward and works best if you can slide the hitch into the receiver and build it from there.

It’s pretty easy to attach the two trays to the base, although be advised that this rack is heavy. I believe it’s around 70lbs, so take your physical ability into account when you decide on buying it online vs at a shop where it can be installed for you. This is the type of rack I’d recommend to my parents, who are older and benefit from wheeling their e-bike up the ramp, but getting it on and off their truck is not trivial.
Arguably the coolest part of this rack is the detachable ramp. I’m in my 30’s and can huck any bike onto the rack, but gosh, I still appreciated how easy the ramp makes it. Basically you fold one of the arms completely down, slot the lightweight ramp in place, and roll your bike right up there. The ramp’s length is adjustable, so it’s easy to get the perfect slope for any size of vehicle. The ramp is sturdy and pretty inflexible, but manages to be light enough to easily toss into the bed or cargo area. It’s really convenient and easy.

The Piston Ion employs the same no-touch design that makes the Piston Pro X so great. By that I mean that 100% of the contact with the bike is on the tires, so there’s no chance of scuffing your frame. The rack’s arms are huge; I had no issues gripping the ultra-wide Maxxis Colossus 4.5″ fatties on the Ari Explorer Peak Comp e-Fat Bike I just reviewed. 4.8″ is the maximum quoted size, by the way. For more conventionally sized tires I had no issues achieving plenty of friction by repositioning the wheel size selectors (which are conveniently labeled).
One thing that makes the Piston Ion stand out is the extra bits to hold onto your bike. Specifically, there is a strap for the rear wheel and a chock for the front wheel. Both of these adjust along the length of the rack for a perfect fit. The rear wheel strap gave me a minor headache at times when closing up the rack. It was nothing major; I needed to secure the strap before closing it but I’m in a hurry 99% of the time and that step tripped me up and led to a squished and un-asthetic strap situation when stowed.

There are some other luxury features that are worth a mention. One of the big ones is the new Foot Pedal Lock. Pretty much all of Küat’s hitch racks have a fold-out feature so that you can access your rear hatch or truck bed. Because the Piston Ion is built to carry such heavy loads, they built in an additional safety mechanism to make sure it never drops unintentionally.
Küat’s security solution is a thick, smooth rubber coated cable that locks with a key into the rack base. The cable does a really nice job at not scraping frames, although if there’s dirt on the frame it will grind that in. I am mixed about the cable. I think it would be pretty easy to cut with good cable cutters. Overall my preference would be locking arms that physically keep the bike in place and resist theft, but so far Küat hasn’t implemented this in any of their designs. In fairness, it is not a common approach it’s a more a fantasy of mine.

I got to enjoy the Piston Ion throughout the fall and winter, mostly hauling around either the Ari Explorer Peak or my other commuter e-bike. I really appreciated the rack’s overall ease of use and super-secure hold on my bike. My commuter has fenders, and with the added straps it was easy to get a good secure fit. I think this is the perfect rack for people whose every day ride is a heavy e-bike, or for folks who are getting to the point where they don’t want to be squatting their 50lb e-bike. Either group is going to get a super high-quality rack with premium parts and engineering that will last for decades.
