Kubrat Pulev vs Murat Gassiev – Results & Post-Fight Report

Murat Gassiev became the WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight world champion with a stunning, one-punch sixth-round knockout of Kubrat Pulev in Dubai on Friday.

Gassiev detonated a devastating left hook which floored Pulev and the Bulgarian was unable to beat the count at the Duty Free Tennis Stadium.

Pulev, making just a first defence of his crown, made a dominant start, keeping his Russian rival at bay with his piston-like jab in the opening few rounds.

Gassiev (33-2, 26 KOs) started to let his hands go in the third round, connecting to the 44-year-old’s body.

But Pulev (32-4, 14 KOs) regained control in a frantic fifth round, which saw him stumble Gassiev back to the ropes with a hard right hand.

The 32-year-old was having success to the body in the fifth in a very competitive round.

The former cruiserweight world champion though ended proceedings in a flash a round later.

A sweetly-timed left hook sent Pulev crashing to the canvas.

‘The Cobra’ bravely attempted to beat the count, but his legs weren’t underneath him and his battle was run.

Gassiev will have to make a mandatory defence of his title against Moses Itauma, providing the 20-year-old gets past Jermaine Franklin on January 24.

Pulev suffered his fourth professional loss and his third inside the distance after previous stoppage defeats to Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

Usmonov overcomes Hughes

Bakhodur Usmonov staged a late fightback to defeat Maxi Hughes and edge closer to a lightweight world title shot.

Hughes (29-8-2, 6 KOs) had dominated the early stages, but Usmonov (12-0, 5 KOs) came back strongly in the second half of the bout to earn a majority decision victory.

One judged scored the bout 114-114 apiece, but was overruled by two scores of 116-112 and 115-113 in favour of the Tajik, who is highly-ranked in the WBA in the race to face champion, Gervonta Davis, with this bout an eliminator for hit title.

Musaev stops Mbenge

Vadim Musaev scored a third round stoppage to rip the IBO welterweight world title from Tulani Mbenge.

Musaev (14-0, 9 KOs) floored Mbenge (22-3, 16 KOs) in the second round and a straight left hand laid out the South African.

Agrba gains revenge over Munoz

Khariton Agrba gained revenge over Ruben Nestor Neri Munoz in their rematch at super lightweight.

Agrba (17-1 9 KOs) suffered a second round knockout loss to Munoz (18-3 14 KOs) in July, but the 30-year-old southpaw made no mistake this time around running out a clear winner on the scorecards.

Remaining Undercard

Indian welterweight prospect, Faizan Anwar (21-0, 9 KOs) remained undefeated with a points victory over Khuseyn Baysangurov (25-2, 20 KOs)

Nico Ali Walsh (12-2-1, 5 KOs) returned to winning ways after a draw last time out, outpointing Jeremiah Sserwadda (12-5-1, 9 KOs) over six rounds at middleweight.

Russian lightweight hope, Daud Alaev (14-1, 8 KOs) forced Dave Penalosa (20-2, 12 KOs) to retire after six rounds.

The IBA Pro bantamweight world title went the way of Yoel Finol (3-0) who won his immediate rematch against Shakhobidin Zoirov (1-1) on points again.

Artem Suslenkov (14-0, 9 KOs) won the IBA Pro Intercontinental heavyweight title with a brutal sixth round knockout of Stanley Wright (14-2, 11 KOs).
