LA Rams make huge coaching decision as rising star, 35, is given surprise promotion for 2026 season

The Los Angeles Rams are promoting passing-game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase to the offensive coordinator position, according to multiple reports.

Scheelhaase was one of the brightest young stars in this year’s NFL coaching carousel after interviewing for five head coaching positions.

However, after being passed over for each of those jobs, he has now been promoted to the top offensive job within one of the league’s best organizations.

Scheelhaase’s passing game last season was a revelation – with the Rams leading the league in both yards per game and passing yards per game.

He also helped 38-year-old quarterback Matthew Stafford win the 2025 NFL MVP Award as the Rams reached the NFC Championship game before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Scheelhaase’s promotion comes after the Rams’ former offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur, was hired as the new head coach of the division rival Arizona Cardinals.

Before the Rams, Scheelhaase was a star quarterback at the University of Illinois across four seasons.

He began his coaching career at his alma mater in the operations department before working as the running backs coach and as an offensive assistant.

Scheelhaase was then poached by Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell to work as their running backs coach in 2018.

He’d be promoted through the Cyclones’ system until being named offensive coordinator in 2023.

The following season, Rams coach Sean McVay brought Scheelhaase out to Los Angeles as an offensive assistant and passing game specialist.

This offseason, the 35-year-old’s name came up repeatedly in the head coach hiring cycle and he secured himself multiple interviews.

He completed a pair of interviews with the Cleveland Browns for their vacancy before the team ultimately went with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

In addition, Scheelhaase interviewed with the Baltimore Ravens, the Buffalo Bills, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
