Leeds win on penalties after West Ham come back from two goals down and have two goals disallowed

Leeds United go on to win on penalties after West Ham come back from two goals down and also have two goals disallowed.

On the 26th minute, Leeds went one up through Ao Tanaka, who got himself into space in the area and his deflected shot came off the underside of the crossbar haven beaten West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola.

62 minutes in, West Ham’s Taty Castellanos headed onto the post after a cross sent in by Adama Traore.

Shortly after that, Leeds’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored from a spot kick, after a tackle from West Ham defender Max Kilman took out Leeds forward Brenden Aaronson. Referee Craig Pawson went to the monitor, awarded the penalty and booked Kilman.

Then came the unbelievable scenes, Mateus Fernandes getting one back for West Ham on the third of 11 added minutes, then on the sixth, Axel Disasi made it 2-2. Some West Ham fans could be seen walking out of the ground on 80 minutes. The tie went to extra time.

The drama continued just a minute in, Taty Castellanos thought he had scored after an error from Leeds keeper Lucas Perri, an offside check disallowed the goal.

On 101 minutes, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen saw a shot come back off the post again, Pablo was there to turn it home, only for the assistant referee’s flag to go up.

Chelsea v Leeds
Manchester City v Southampton

Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri, speaking on TNT Sports about making it to the FA Cup semi-final: “Great. It’s the magic of the cup we all talk about. It was a crazy game, incredible moments. We’re so happy we won at the end of the game, penalty shoot-out and that’s it. Now we’re going to celebrate and keep going.

“We need to be prepared for everything and after they scored the first one, we knew they would come to attack to draw and force the game to extra-time. The beginning of the first half of extra-time was a situation of football and thank God that was offside. So happy that we won that match.”

On making the semi-final: “It’s going to be a massive game. Now we need to focus on the Premier League matches that we have. We need to secure the points we need to stay in the league, but when the time comes, we’re going to focus 100% on the cup and hopefully have a good game.”

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke, speaking to TNT Sports: “We always do it the tough way, never the easy way. A quarter-final away game against a Premier League side is never an easy ride. We could have made our lives easier. We showed great mentality and I am proud of the boys today with how we kept the nerves and won the game in the end. Pretty important day for everyone connected with Leeds United.

“To score two goals, we could have put the game to bed even a bit earlier. We had a late sucker punch when the whole stadium was buzzing. To keep the nerves and win the penalty shootout shows great mentality and character. A chapter of Leeds United history, we were in the semi-finals really a while ago.”

On the 9,000 travelling fans now looking forward to a Wembley trip: “It will be a big night for us. It’s a great step for this club and a great reward for everyone connected with this club. We are still buzzing but already looking forward to making sure we stay on a good path in the Premier League.”

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen speaking to TNT Sports: “Gutted. It hurts a lot after being 2-0 down. I missed and I can only apologise to everyone involved for that. You never want to miss penalties but I have today and I have to face that. It doesn’t define who I am but I have to stand tall from that. We did a lot of good things in the game but it wasn’t to be.

On the performance: “In the first half, we had a few good opportunities, the keeper made a great save from Taty [Castellanos] and from me. Our shape probably wasn’t good enough and we tweaked a few things. At 2-0 down you have to go for it. We thought we would go on and win the game but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Here’s the fans reaction as Leeds win on penalties after West Ham come back from two goals down and have two goals disallowed…

@Scotlufc: I love you so much but you lot are gonna be the bloody death of me

@SmilerLUFC: I’ve always loved Football… no that wasn’t me saying I’m never going to watch another game again about 15 minutes ago heartbroken they disappointed 😂😂

@dwlufc_: Perri deserved the win, the others I’m not so sure. Cup is on

@NotCellium: I swear this club deliberately tries to kill its fans. Heart attack fuel every bloody time LMAO.

@Army_Dad6880: That’s was unnecessarily difficult. But well done in the end

@LufcSeppo: Doing things the hard way 😬 Wouldn’t be Leeds otherwise, but sometimes I pray… Proud as always #mot

@whuchr: Ignoring the fact Craig Pawson is a spasticated cunt and they should’ve had 10 men, from how disgraceful it was to how we finished we throughly deserved to win. Whoever told Pablo to take a pen needs sacking so obvious. #whufc

@Leeds_lord1: Enjoy the championship and your trophy-less season. You have just been destroyed by Farke’s tricky whites x #

@WestHamJoshV: Pound for pound, Max Kilman has to be the worst player to play for West Ham in terms of mistakes costing the team every single time he plays since Roberto Jimenez in the 19/20 season. Absolutely abysmal. #whufc

@WestHamJoshV: If anything sums up being a West Ham fan it’s a comeback against all odds in the dieing minutes followed by losing your goalkeeper two minutes before a penalty shoot in the quarter final of the FA Cup resulting in defeat. Couldn’t write it.
