Let’s shed some light on the Mega Drive.

A bike light that’s built to perform

I have used a few Lezyne products over the years, and they tend to be beautifully made with high quality materials and machining. One of my favorites is a beautiful chrome tire pump with a sculpted wood handle. I hadn’t used one of their lights before, but I was excited to try the Mega Drive 2400+. Early reviews mentioned the build quality and intensity, so those things were on my mind.

I had three activities that I was really excited to use the Mega Drive for. I wanted to expand my nighttime mountain biking and gravel riding so that the early sunsets in the PNW Fall wouldn’t shut me down. I was (before taking a new job) also a dedicated bike commuter, and having some extra lumens no the commute never hurt.

The Mega Drive really lights up the night

Turning to the light itself, the first thing that stands out is how stellar the build quality is. Lezyne created a machined aluminum casing for the light, which is sleek and smooth. It is a world apart from the plastic-y lights that otherwise dominate the market. The build quality extends even to the USB-C charging port which is covered by a hunky rubber plug to seal out the elements. The attachment to the handlebars is a pretty straightforward rugged strap.

The handlebar strap is tough and thick and I’m not worried about the rubber material cracking or failing prematurely. The mount spins but isn’t otherwise adjustable. It is grippy enough that it can stay put on a bump mountain bike trail and keep the beam where it’s needed.

The attachment is solid but not flashy

I have mixed feelings about the mount. Part of me wishes the light had a track-style mount onto the handlebar attachment so that I could pop it off and charge it without removing the strap. On the flip side, that interface is another spot that can break and I’ve had that happen before on other lights. Lezyne’s solution is sturdy but not especially adaptable or adjustable.

The quality of the illumination is stellar. I absolutely love using this light for dirt and paved pursuits. Its beam is wide and strong, and feels just like a car’s low beams. I think it really excels at illuminating the 15-20 feet immediately in front of your bike. When paired with a strong helmet light, this is more than capable of riding rough MTB trails. On its own, it’s going to give you the confidence to tackle road riding at speed. A total of 8 modes provide a mix of wide, full and focused light as well as flash patterns. The single button makes it foolproof to cycle through.

Even in the daytime this light provides plenty of visibility for cars

I never ran into issues with the battery life and usually ran it on its max setting for 1-2 hour rides, and then charged it up again that night to use again. A lot of the heft of this product comes from its big battery! There are 8 different modes, including a Femto output mode that can run for up to 450 hours (reportedly. Haven’t tested all 450 hours myself). There’s also a super attention grabbing daytime flash mode which is great for cars. The single button changes colors to signify the charge state, which is simple and effective.

One feature I love is the ‘Race Mode,’ which you activate with a 5 second hold. The light flashes, and then clicking the button just alternatives between a high-intensity ‘Overdrive’ max output mode, and a mid-intensity Enduro mode. The idea is that you reduce the intensity for climbing and easily with on Overdrive with descending. Another 5 second hold returns the light to its normal mode selections including the daytime flash patterns.

That green light means we’re fully charged and ready to go!

Overall it’s an easy light to love. It’s really stinking bright and the build quality is exceptional. Sometimes bike lights feel disposable, but this one is clearly going to last for years. The aluminum case disburses heat really well, and that’s important because you can feel the heat coming from the light when it’s on high. It’s smart, too: if the light gets too hot, it will automatically dim.

The Bottom Line

9.4 A Bright Spot

The Lezyne Mega Drive 2400+ sold me on night riding. Its exceptionally bright 2,400-lumen beam, long runtime, and rugged CNC-machined aluminum body make it a standout option for dark PNW months. The light feels premium, from the cooling-fin construction to the sealed USB-C charging port and durable handlebar strap. While the mount isn’t highly adjustable and requires removing the whole unit to charge, it’s extremely sturdy. On the trail or road, the beam pattern is wide, strong, and car-like, excelling at illuminating the area just ahead of the bike. Paired with a helmet light, it’s fully capable for fast MTB riding. Overall, it’s impressively bright, beautifully built, and clearly made to last.

The Good:
  1. Stellar machined aluminum casing will last for years
  2. Excellent overall brightness and beam design
  3. Easy USB-C charging with water resistant plug
  4. Love the smart Race Mode as well as disruptive Daytime Flash
  5. The built-in overheat protection is smart
