The Lions have restructured quarterback Jared Goff’s contract in order to free up $32 million in cap space

The Detroit Lions, like every other team across the NFL, have been hard at work now that the legal tampering period for free agency is open. After missing the playoffs last season, it’s clear that the Lions have some serious work to do, which could lead to the front office making some big moves in preparation for the 2026 campaign.

In order to do so, though, Detroit needs to have money at its disposal. With the new league year set to begin on Wednesday, the Lions are still doing some salary cap gymnastics, which led them to make a big move involving quarterback Jared Goff and his contract, freeing up a large amount of cap space.

Lions Restructure Jared Goff’s Contract

The Lions restructured QB Jared Goff’s contract, converting $40 million of his base salary to a signing bonus and adding a void year to clear $32M in 2026 cap space.

Ever since getting traded to the Lions back in 2021, Goff has been one of the most effective quarterbacks in the NFL, and that continued in 2025. While Detroit didn’t have a great season, Goff put up a typically solid season, as he racked up 4,594 passing yards and 34 touchdowns while starting all 17 games for the fourth-straight year.

Goff’s performance earned him a four-year, $212 million contract extension in May 2024, making him one of the highest-paid players at his position in the league. However, that has put a big strain on the Lions’ front office, as it has to work around Goff’s contract when it comes to building out the rest of the team’s roster.

The good news is that there are ways to create cap space by changing the way contracts look. That’s precisely what Detroit has done with Goff, as it created $32 million in cap space for the 2026 season by converting its star quarterback’s $40 million base salary to a signing bonus. With this money, the Lions have much more space to bring big-name players to town.

Lions Must Put Newfound Cap Space to Good Use

To this point, the Lions’ offseason has been defined by the players they have lost, rather than the players they have brought to town. Key offensive linemen like Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow are gone, as is veteran running back David Montgomery. Guys like Cade Mays and Isiah Pacheco have been signed to help replace their departures, but it feels like there is still a lot of work to be done.

Restructuring Goff’s contract gives Detroit more firepower in free agency, although it is worth noting that many of the top names available are already off the market. The Lions could pivot to the trade market, which was dealt a significant shake-up on Tuesday night when the Baltimore Ravens backed out of their deal with the Las Vegas Raiders for Maxx Crosby. Regardless of how it happens, it’s clear that the front office needs to put this newfound cap space to good use.
