The Detroit Lions have restructured QB Jared Goff’s contract, according to multiple reports, creating some much-needed cap flexibility as free agency unfolds and the new league year begins.

This was a long-anticipated move. With a number of needs and little cap space available, Goff’s contract was a logical next step to free up space in a hurry after some notable shrewd moves this offseason. The release of left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow created roughly $17.1 million, and the Lions took it a step further with this move. Goff was set to earn a base salary of $55 million with a cap hit of $69.6 million in 2026. However, the Lions will convert $40 million of his base salary into a signing bonus — dropping his cap hit to $37.6 million and creating $32 million in cap space, per Over The Cap. They are now firmly under the cap ahead of the new league year — set to begin at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday.

Goff signed a four-year, $212 million extension with the Lions in 2024. He’s coming off a Pro-Bowl season, ranking second in passing yards (4,564) and touchdowns (34), third in passer rating (105.5) and tied for fifth in completion percentage (68.0).

This is a crucial offseason for the Lions, after a fourth-place finish in the NFC North at 9-8. The organization believes it isn’t far off, but in order to regain contender status, it’ll need serious reinforcements in free agency and the draft. The Lions could still be in the market for help at tight end, edge, defensive tackle, safety, cornerback and the offensive line, as free agency unfolds and the draft approaches.

This restructure gives them added flexibility to pursue and sign some of their targets. We’ll find out soon enough how they’ll choose to spend it.
