Liverpool and Newcastle United are intensifying their efforts to sign Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez, according to a report from Correio da Manha as relayed by Sport Witness.
The 28-year-old Colombian international has been one of the most prolific strikers in European football this season, scoring 33 goals and providing seven assists across 42 appearances for the Portuguese champions.
With an €80 million release clause in his contract, securing his signature will not come cheap but both Premier League clubs are said to be fighting tooth and nail to get the deal done.
Suarez largely flew under the radar during his formative years and for much of his career, but his move to Sporting CP from UD Almeria last summer has transformed his profile entirely. He is now on the radar of clubs across the continent, and Liverpool and Newcastle appear to be leading the Premier League charge for a player who has essentially come from nowhere to become one of the world’s most talked-about strikers in the space of a single season.
Is €80m justifiable for Luis Suarez?
Thirty-three goals and seven assists in 42 appearances is a remarkable return by any standard, and it explains why clubs are willing to engage with a release clause of that size.
Suarez has not just been productive, but he has also been consistently productive across all competitions, suggesting this is not a short hot streak but a genuine shift to a higher level. For Newcastle in particular, a striker of that calibre would represent exactly the kind of statement signing the club has been trying to make.
Sporting CP have previously shown a willingness to negotiate transfer fees below a player’s stated release clause, which gives both Liverpool and Newcastle some hope that the final figure could come in below the €80 million headline number. How far below remains to be seen, but the precedent is there and both clubs will be hoping to use it.
Newcastle United Luis Suarez interest makes more sense than Liverpool’s pursuit
Of the two clubs, Newcastle’s need for a striker is far easier to justify.
Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa were both signed last summer to address the attacking position, but neither has delivered the output Eddie Howe would have hoped for.
Woltemade in particular has been linked with a move away from St. James’ Park already, suggesting the experiment has not worked. Suarez would give Newcastle a genuine centre-forward who can be relied upon to deliver goals at a high level, something the club has been searching for since missing out on Joao Pedro last summer.
Liverpool’s involvement is more puzzling. Arne Slot’s side brought in both Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak last summer, giving them significant firepower up front already. Adding another centre-forward who cannot play elsewhere would create a serious logjam in attack.
The report does point to a potential full-scale tug-of-war for Suarez, but Liverpool’s logic in pursuing him at this stage of their squad-building is harder to follow.
Can Newcastle United afford an €80m Luis Suarez transfer this summer?
Eddie Howe’s recent public comments about the club’s financial position have raised doubts about the scale of investment available in the summer window, and committing €80 million to a single striker (even one of Suarez’s output) would be a significant portion of any realistic budget.
The hope will be that Sporting CP’s negotiating flexibility reduces the final outlay to a more manageable figure.
If Newcastle can get a deal done at a price that works, Suarez feels like a natural fit for what Howe is trying to build. A prolific South American striker arriving with 33 goals already to his name this season would electrify St. James’ Park and send a clear message about the club’s ambitions.
Whether the finances allow for it is the only real obstacle. Both clubs will push hard but Newcastle arguably need him more.
