In a thrilling encounter at Lord’s, the London Spirit women secured a 20-run victory over the Birmingham Phoenix women in the fifth match of The Hundred Women’s Competition on July 27, 2024. London Spirit, batting first, posted a challenging total of 147/9 in their allotted 100 balls.

Meg Lanning led the charge with a superb 53 off 41 balls, supported by brisk contributions from Cordelia Griffith (21 off 10) and Heather Knight (26 off 18). Birmingham Phoenix’s Katie Levick was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs, while Emily Arlott chipped in with 2 for 33.

Chasing 148, Birmingham Phoenix got off to a shaky start, losing early wickets with Suzie Bates and Sterre Kalis falling cheaply. Captain Ellyse Perry anchored the innings with a fighting 65 off 48 balls, while Sophie Devine contributed a solid 37 off 31 balls.

Despite their efforts, the Phoenix fell short, managing only 127/5 in their 100 balls. Sarah Glenn was instrumental in the Spirit’s bowling attack, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs, including the crucial scalps of Perry and Devine, which halted the Phoenix’s momentum.

The London Spirit’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding ultimately proved decisive. Tara Norris and Danielle Gibson also bowled economically, containing the Phoenix’s scoring rate. The Spirit’s victory was a testament to their all-round performance, with Meg Lanning earning the Player of the Match accolade for her pivotal half-century.
