Luton urge social media companies to do more after another incident of online racist abuse

So, Luton Town win another football match and it happens again. And we’re not just talking about Chris Powell’s unbridled post-match celebration after Saturday’s win over Stevenage at Kenilworth Road.

Racism. On Instagram.

As sure as night follows day, a Luton win on TV is followed by a vile message aimed at one of our black players, or in this case, a member of staff.

And let’s be clear from the off, as these things are often misunderstood. This does not appear to be a supporter of Luton Town or Stevenage. It’s come from a German account that has no previous posts about English football.

We thought long and hard about whether to share the name of the person who posted it, but decided not to spark a witch-hunt – although by posting a racial slur on one of our videos, that person advertised themselves anyway.

They didn’t even bother sliding into Chris’ DMs, as we’ve seen so often in the past with abuse of Elijah Adebayo, Teden Mengi, Gabe Osho, Carlton Morris, Tahith Chong and Peter Kioso, to name a few.

We’re now tired of saying we’re tired. We’re saddened by hearing our black players say they aren’t bothered about following reports through. Especially when we wait over a year for a perpetrator, a criminal, to be brought to court and be fined a measly couple of hundred quid, and not even be given an automatic football banning order.

Going on previous examples, we wouldn’t even get that far with this one anyway with it coming from an overseas account, which sadly falls out of our equally frustrated local and UK police’s jurisdiction.

So we’re posting it here and letting everyone see what our friends, our Luton family, have to endure for simply winning a game of football.

We stand with Chris Powell and all victims of online discriminatory abuse.

What we won’t stand for is the abuse continuing and nothing being done about it.

The social media companies need to do more to prevent these people committing crimes via a keyboard.

And that action needs to start right now.

Back in October 2024, Luton Town send an extraordinary message to racist abusers in support of Elijah Adebayo.

A strongly-worded statement has been issued after Adebayo received a discriminatory direct message on Instagram.

The club called out the abuse by “faceless racists”, saying the club was “angry, upset and frustrated”, asking if the abuse “is ever going to stop?”.

Twitter users reacted as Luton urge social media companies to do more after another incident of online racist abuse…

@SSE_LTFC: It’s rife in the lower leagues sadly, people think they can get away with it

@diamondattack12: Genuinely loved this man more than Röhl when they were at Wednesday, such a nice and genuine guy. I stand with you @ChrisPowell1969 theres no room for racism in football 💙🦉

@ltfclouis: No one deserves it, love you Powell 🧡

@StandUpForBarry: Chris Powell is a credit to football.

@LTFC_Dave: Disgraceful. Something needs to be done so more action can be taken against these vermin

@MattHills99: Luton fans are fully behind Chris & all other people that are targeted by these 2nd rate racist swamp dwellers, that sadly remain anonymous 😒

@TomBoulter86: Had the pleasure of meeting @ChrisPowell1969 several times over the years at Roots Hall. An absolute gent! Disgusted to see this has happened but pleased to see LTFC standing in support. There is no place in football for racism. 🔵⚪️

@adamcmb_: You need serious help if the first thing to come across your mind if you lose is to be racist online anonymously

@k3zz4x: Chris Powell is such a beautiful guy. Miss him so much at Hillsborough. As for anyone being racist, I cannot understand it never will. Anyone being racist needs to get in bin… wankers

@LutonTownExile: I genuinely think we should lead from the front on this. This cannot go on & the highest form of protest action should be taken. We should refuse to play a 3 pm Saturday League game. Get this 100% all over the world media. Force the authorities to stop it properly. This is 2026.

@simpswino: Social media companies will no doubt continue to do absolutely nothing, yet again. And sod all the “rivals, not enemies” bollocks, we’re all human beings. One of us has been racially abused, not for the first time, sadly not for the last. Scum of the earth #watfordfc #ltfc

@PeterDavidKirby: Ban all racist football “supporters” from all grounds for life. It is unacceptable and the vast majority of football supporters would feel the same.

@cafcjk: Whoever has been racist to Sir Chris Powell your days are numbered. Blokes a fucking legend, give your head a wobble.
