M6 closed as Man City fan coach bursts into flames on way to Carabao Cup final at Wembley

The M6 had to be closed as a Man City fan coach bursts into flames on the way to Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

A coach, carrying Manchester City supporters, came to stop on the M6 Toll near Junction 3 in the West Midlands, with the vehicle engulfed in bright orange flames on the roadside, with fire coming from the windshield.

Manchester Evening News (MEN) reports it remains unclear if any injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service rushed to the scene and are working to bring the blaze under control.

National Highways said: “The M6 Toll in Warwickshire is closed southbound between T4 (Weeford) and T2 (Coleshill) due to a coach fire.

“Emergency services including Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also providing assistance with traffic management on scene.”

The agency said diversions had been put in place and advised drivers to to consider taking an alternate route.

Queues continued to build on the A38 and nearby roads, with delays on London Road and Lichfield Road, near Bassetts Pole. The M6 Toll remained closed southbound between junctions two and three. Traffic started to move again by 1:20pm.

National Highways: West Midlands (@HighwaysWMIDS) updated just after 1pm: “The #M6Toll in #Warwickshire remains closed southbound between T4 (#Weeford) and T2 (#Coleshill).

“We are hoping to be able to get lane 3 open to allow traffic caught within the closure to pass the scene.”

One witness said to Manchester Evening News that passengers had been evacuated before being left waiting on the grass verge, watching the dramatic scenes.

She said: “I wanted to report an incident currently unfolding on the M6 involving a coach carrying Manchester City fans travelling to Wembley.

“The coach has caught fire and is now severely damaged, with large plumes of smoke visible.

“Emergency services are on scene, and parts of the motorway appear to be closed, causing significant delays.

“Passengers have been evacuated and are currently waiting on the grass verge.

“No serious injuries have been reported so far.”

A spokesperson for Ridleys Coaches has said: “We can confirm an incident occurred involving one of our coaches on the M6 Toll southbound earlier today.

“All passengers and the driver were safely evacuated with no injuries.

“We are grateful to the emergency services for their swift response.

“The coach was carrying fans to the Carabao Cup final, and the passengers are all safely on replacement coaches to the stadium.

“We are working with authorities to understand the circumstances and will provide further updates as appropriate.”
