MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY – Rugby Wrap Up

League, Players establish first-ever union contract in U.S. rugby

NEW YORK, NYMajor League Rugby (MLR) and the United States Rugby Players Association (USRPA) today announced that MLR Players have unanimously ratified their first-ever collective bargaining agreement (CBA), a landmark step that establishes core professional standards for rugby players in the United States. As U.S. rugby enters a period of unprecedented visibility, the two-year agreement, covering the 2026 and 2027 seasons, creates essential protections that will help stabilize and improve the league.

The agreement comes at a pivotal moment for the sport. With the United States set to host future Rugby World Cups, professional rugby is poised for increased attention and opportunities — while still navigating the financial realities of a growing league.

The agreement provides every MLR Player with increased salaries alongside several other new rights and protections, including rights for injured players and free agents, health and safety protections, and the establishment of a clear discipline policy and neutral grievance procedure. It also includes an economic reopener after the 2026 Season, giving the parties flexibility to respond to the league’s changing financial conditions.

“This CBA formalized key protections and provides stability so Players can focus on performing at the highest level,” said Chris Mattina, Executive Director of the USRPA. “This agreement reflects a respectful, collaborative negotiation process and shared commitment of Players and the league to grow professional rugby responsibly in the U.S.”

“Make no mistake – this is a momentous achievement for the sport in the U.S,” said Graeme Bradbury, Co-President of MLR. As reaching the first CBA for American rugby provides clarity heading into the 2026 season and demonstrates a commitment to finding common ground as MLR seeks to grow the game in the U.S. “This is a historic agreement for American rugby, signaling a recognition by all parties that we’re best when we work together, collaborate together, and grow together. The league is ready to deliver another year of thrilling rugby action for our passionate fans.”

The new CBA is a proud testament to the shared vision between MLR and USRPA, focusing on elevating the standards for all Players while building on a strong foundation to support the growth of the league. The two sides worked closely together to identify common ground in crafting a comprehensive agreement that delivers a responsible, yet expansive framework of support for all.
