Manchester United boss Michael Carrick will hope to continue his impressive start to his tenure when his side visit Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Englishman has overseen six wins from seven Premier League matches since being appointed as United’s caretaker head coach in January, drawing the other.

That run of form has left the Red Devils well placed in the race to secure a top four spot, with United currently occupying fourth place, above Liverpool and Chelsea.

Ahead of their visit to St. James’ Park, it appears that the match could give United an opportunity to watch one of their transfer targets in action.

According to Spanish outlet AS, via CaughtOffside, Man United have made initial contact with the representatives of Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali about a potential move this summer.

The report claims that United have identified the Italy international as a potential target as they look to bolster their squad in midfield.

Tonali, 25, joined the Magpies from Serie A side AC Milan back in 2023 and has since established himself as a key player at St. James’ Park.

So far this season the Italian has made 43 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side, helping them secure qualification for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

The Italian – who recently made his 100th appearance for Newcastle – has been linked with a move away from England but the report suggests that it is increasingly likely that the midfielder will remain in the Premier League.

While United are said to have made informal contact with the representatives of the midfielder, it remains unclear whether or not the Manchester outfit are intending to make a formal offer for the player.

Tonali’s current contract with Newcastle is set to run until the end of the 2027/28 campaign.
