Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils announced on Monday morning that the Portuguese had been relieved of his duties, less than 24 hours after United were held to a 1-1 draw by fierce rivals Leeds United at Elland Road.

Amorim took charge of United in November 2024 having enjoyed huge success with previous side Sporting CP.

His time in Manchester didn’t go to plan, though, with the Red Devils winning just 25 of his 63 matches in charge of the club.

So far this season the Manchester giants have won only eight of their 20 Premier League games, with Amorim leaving United sixth in the top flight standings.

The ex-Sporting boss had found himself under huge pressure on more than one occasion during his relatively short tenure at Old Trafford, including earlier this season following United’s dismal start to the campaign.

United won just two of their first six league games this term, although an improved run of form during November and December prompted the Red Devils to move up the table.

In August, United suffered a humiliating penalty shoot-out defeat against League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with Amorim shown to not be watching the spot-kicks on the sidelines.

Last term, Amorim guided United to the final of the Europa League, but they were beaten 1-0 by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a dismal encounter in the Spanish city of Bilbao.

United also confirmed that former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for their visit to Turf Moor to face Burnley on Wednesday evening.
