Manchester City’s Risa Shimizu Suffers Knee Injury at Olympics

Manchester City’s promising start to the season has been dealt a potential blow with the news that summer signing Risa Shimizu has suffered a knee injury while representing Japan at the Paris Olympics. The 28-year-old full-back, who joined the Citizens from West Ham United earlier this month, was forced to leave the pitch during Japan’s opening match against Spain.

Manchester City Confirms the News

A statement from the club confirmed the unfortunate news, revealing that Shimizu will return to the City Football Academy for further evaluation by the club’s medical team. The extent of the injury remains unknown at this stage, leaving Manchester City facing an anxious wait for an update on the defender’s condition.

Shimizu had arrived at the Etihad Stadium with high expectations after impressing during her two-year spell at West Ham United. The Japanese international made 44 appearances for the Hammers, scoring once, and also represented her country at the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups.

Upon joining City, Shimizu expressed her excitement about the move, highlighting the club’s possession-based style of play as a key factor in her decision. She stated, “First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for. City play football with a high possession style, which I like. I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the trophy with my new teammates.”

A Major Setback

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor was equally enthusiastic about the signing, praising Shimizu’s intelligence, technical ability, and experience. He expressed his delight at bringing the Japanese defender to the club.

However, the news of Shimizu’s injury has cast a shadow over City’s preparations for the upcoming WSL season. The team’s opening match against Arsenal on September 22 is just around the corner, and the absence of Shimizu could significantly impact their defensive options.

The club will now focus on providing Shimizu with the necessary support and care as she undergoes treatment and rehabilitation. Fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for the talented defender, who will be eager to contribute to Manchester City’s success once she returns to full fitness.
