Maple Leafs’ Brandon Carlo, Dakota Joshua, Anthony Stolarz out for season, won’t require surgery

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo, forward Dakota Joshua and goaltender Anthony Stolarz will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries, head coach Craig Berube confirmed Saturday morning.

“Carlo, Stolarz and Joshua will be out for the rest of the season,” Berube said.

Berube clarified that none of the injuries will require surgery. Carlo, Joshua and Stolarz all sustained their injuries during Wednesday’s loss to the Washington Capitals. Stolarz exited the contest early in the first period, leaving the game with the assistance of a trainer after making a pad save.

Due to a host of injuries, along with the fact that the Maple Leafs have nothing to play for, defenceman William Villeneuve will make his NHL debut on Saturday. Villeneuve has recorded three goals and 29 points with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season.

“He’s a skilled guy. He skates very well and he moves puck. Offensive, more than the other side of it. We’ll see how it goes,” Berube said of Villeneuve.

“It’s pretty special, especially in Toronto. When I look back, I got into the organization in 2020 and been playing here for four years so I feel pretty grateful and pretty lucky to be here today and I’m excited for the opportunity,” Villeneuve said Saturday.

Carlo has fought through injuries throughout the 2025-26 campaign. The veteran defenceman required foot surgery in December, missing nearly two months of action after sustaining an injury during a November 13 game against the Los Angeles Kings. Joshua also fought through injury this season, suffering a lacerated kidney during a December 28 contest against the Detroit Red Wings, missing nearly two months.

All three players are under contract for the 2026-27 season, but as the Maple Leafs consider a retool, or a full-scale rebuild this summer, it’s possible that the team could elect to move them in a trade, while considering all options.
