Maple Leafs GM, Nurse Trade Talk, and a Shot at Ullmark

April Fools’ Day brought lots of speculation, with potential GM candidates, trades, and a post-game comment providing plenty of headlines. It was a great day for stories, with plenty of action from the Toronto Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and Florida Panthers.

The Maple Leafs have fired Brad Treliving, and now the media is looking for potential replacements, with a former player being among them. Darnell Nurse trade buzz could be more than smoke and mirrors, as the Detroit Red Wings have emerged as a potential landing spot for Oilers defenceman. Finally ,Paul Maurice made some interesting post-game comments, which some in the industry have seen as a shot at Senators goalie Linus Ullmark.

Spezza as the Leafs GM?

The Maple Leafs made their first major organizational move on Tuesday, parting ways with GM Brad Treliving. The decision sets the franchise on a new path—and brings an even bigger question into focus: who will step in as the team’s next general manager?

At this stage, a half-dozen candidates appear to be leading the way as potential replacements, or at the very least, are expected to receive serious consideration from the organization.

Jason Spezza Maple Leafs retires

Several names have already surfaced as potential candidates. Among them are Doug Armstrong, Brandon Pridham, Doug Wilson, and Chris Pronger. Also in the mix are Bill Scott and Rob Blake, who held his role with the Kings from 2017 to 2025.

Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list, however, is Jason Spezza. The 19-year NHL veteran spent three seasons in Toronto before joining the front office in 2022 as part of former GM Kyle Dubas’s staff.

“If Jason Spezza feels he’s ready, I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t get an interview,” NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said.

Each candidate brings a unique mix of strengths and experience, along with potential drawbacks, making this a critical decision for the organization. Whoever the Maple Leafs ultimately choose will be under intense scrutiny. Team president and CEO Keith Pelley also made it clear on Tuesday that the incoming GM won’t be using the word “rebuild.”

Red Wings Could Be a Match For Oilers’ Nurse

There’s been plenty of buzz surrounding Darnell Nurse and the possibility of a trade. For the most part, it’s felt similar to speculation involving players like Auston Matthews and Brady Tkachuk—more smoke than substance, rather than a concrete rumor.

However, a new report suggests that a potential deal involving Nurse and the Detroit Red Wings may be worth watching this summer.

Oilers analyst Mathew Panchyshyn wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the Oilers could win a Cup this year and still acquire Sebastian Cossa (from Detroit) and move Nurse. According to Panchyshyn, there is some genuine interest from both sides, with the Oilers needing a goalie and the Red Wings needing a left-handed defenceman.

Nurse is in the fourth year of the eight-year, $74 million extension he signed to stay in Edmonton back in 2021. Along with the big price tag, he also carries a no-move clause, which is part of the reason moving him has been so difficult. The Red Wings will have the cap space to acquire Nurse, but they will also have a young goalie they are willing to move on from. The Red Wings join the San Jose Sharks as a team in the Nurse sweepstakes. It’s not a guarantee that he will be traded, but if he is, the Wings will definitely look to make a play.

Linus Ullmark Might Have Caught Another Stray

Linus Ullmark has had a difficult few days following his decision to sit out a pivotal game for the Ottawa Senators. In the aftermath, plenty of voices have weighed in, with some critics going as far as to suggest the netminder quit on his team.

One person not expected to enter the conversation was Paul Maurice. However, the Florida Panthers bench boss may have made an indirect remark about the situation following his team’s convincing 6–3 win over Ottawa. Maurice spoke about injuries, his team’s performance, and the victory, but raised eyebrows with a closing comment, referring to it as a “good mental health win.”

While the remark wasn’t explicitly directed at Ullmark, the timing makes it difficult to ignore a possible connection. The 32-year-old goaltender now holds a 23-11-8 record, along with a 2.85 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage. Whether Maurice’s comment was intentional or not remains unclear, but for Ullmark’s sake, the focus will be on moving forward and putting the situation behind him.
