Report: Maple Leafs, NHLPA, William Nylander’s agent requested to have segment removed from All Or Nothing

A segment from the Amazon Prime series featuring Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander and then-head coach Sheldon Keefe was reportedly requested to be removed before the show’s release in 2021.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared the story during a recent episode of 32 Thoughts The Podcast, stating that numerous parties got involved to have Amazon remove the segment from the show, as it would have portrayed Nylander in a negative light.

“In the first Amazon show they did, the ‘All or Nothing’, there was a scene in there that the Leafs and the NHLPA and his agent all fought to have taken out, and it wasn’t supposed to happen. Like, everybody was supposed to be like, ‘It’s there, you have to say yes.’ But the Leafs, the players’ association, and the agent, it was an argument between Keefe and Nylander, and those three felt strongly it made Nylander look bad,” Friedman reported. “And initially, Amazon fought it. They’re like, ‘Nope.’ But (the three groups) put up such a stink that eventually they won their way. So this is a marriage, and like I said, I know Nylander drives some people crazy, but he’s been good for them, and they’ve been good for him.”

The segment in question was an argument between Nylander and Keefe, though it wasn’t clear if this occurred during a practice or a game. It wasn’t uncommon that the coach would get a little feisty with the star winger when he was struggling, since Nylander has made it known he sometimes needs to be given a shake during moments like this.

As the footage likely won’t ever see the light of day, we obviously can’t assess whether the Leafs, NHLPA, and Nylander’s agents’ fears were justified in getting the clip removed. But one has to wonder what else was sent to the cutting room floor beyond segments involving Nylander and Keefe.

Fast forward to the present day, and Nylander once again has a head coach who isn’t afraid to get in his grill when he is struggling, in Craig Berube. While some can view it as combative, it is clear that the two have mutual respect for one another, as the unlikely partnership has been able to generate some of Nylander’s most prolific scoring stretches of his career thus far.
During the Leafs’ victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, the broadcast caught a heated exchange between Berube and Nylander after the latter was late getting back to the defensive end. Whatever was said clearly worked as Nylander went on to score the overtime winner and get his team two much-needed points in the standings.
