For the moment at least, the weather in southeast Michigan is defying the old saying that “March Comes In Like A Lion and Goes Out Like A Lamb”
On Wednesday, March 4, I played at Washtenaw Golf Club under blue skies and fifty-degree temperatures. The ten-day forecast says it might reach 70 over the weekend, and again on Monday.
March has come in like a lamb. No doubt weather karma will come back to bite us in the rear like a lion soon enough. There’s no way we avoid another round or two of freezing temperatures and snow between now and May.
We might even get snow in May. When I was coaching high school golf twenty years ago, my team played in a state tournament in a cloud of snow flurries. The team was ready to quit before they teed off. It took all my powers of persuasion to get them to compete.
Still, it is nice to think that the worst is behind us.
For what it’s worth — and for the record — this March round marks the 133rd consecutive month with at least one round played in Michigan. The streak continues.
A lot of people were out playing on Wednesday, in spite of it being walking only. There was a veritable fleet of MGI electric golf carts whizzing around the course (read GolfBlogger’s MGI Zip Navigator review). Washtenaw Golf Club sells them through the pro shop, and co-owner Nick Ma is a brand ambassador, so that should come as no surprise.
I had been practicing weekly over the last couple of months on Washtenaw’s simulators, and was pleased to find that at least some of what I’ve been working on has translated to the course. I’ve still got a long way to go to get rid of the bad habits I’ve accumulated over the last several years.
I’m determined, however, to make this my best season of golf in a decade.
