Mario Kart World sales surpass 14 million

Mario Kart World’s impressive sales still pale in comparison to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Mario Kart World has sold over 14 million copies, Nintendo has announced.

According to Nintendo’s Q3 2026 earnings report, the Switch 2-exclusive kart racer has sold a whopping 14.3 million units as of 31st December 2025 since it launched alongside the console in June last year.

However, these figures also include bundle sales. At launch, Mario Kart World was cheaper to buy as a bundle with the console than buying them separately, so it’s not surprising that this has helped bolster sales.

Switch 2 sales stand at 17.37 million during the same period, meaning that most people who bought the console also own Mario Kart World.

It’s a strong start for the Switch 2 kart racer. However, its sales pale in comparison to its Switch 1 predecessor, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. With over 70.59 million copies sold, it remains the best-selling game in the series by a wide margin.

Nintendo says that original first-party Switch 1 games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continue to “show stable sales” as they are backwards compatible on the Switch 2.

Alongside new characters, wall-riding mechanics and a Knockout Tour mode, Mario Kart World introduces a free-roam mode with interconnected locations in the traditional Grand Prix mode.

While its predecessor received a raft of new tracks and characters via the paid Booster Course Pass, Nintendo has yet to announce future updates or DLC plans for Mario Kart World.

Last December, Mario Kart World was crowned the best sports/racing game at The Game Awards, beating its chief rival, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

It’s not the only first-party Switch 2 racing game, either. Released in November, Kirby Air Riders, a surprise sequel to the GameCube’s Kirby Air Ride, has sold 1.76 million units according to the latest figures.
