With the Dallas Mavericks in disarray, rumors emerged that one of their stars was contemplating retirement, only for Mark Cuban to deny these rumors.
The Dallas Mavericks find themselves in a difficult position this season, having started things very poorly to begin their campaign.
The rookie year of Cooper Flagg was muddied by the situation surrounding Nico Harrison, with the fans’ protests eventually resulting in the GM’s firing by Governor Patrick Dumont.
Did Nico Harrison deserve to be fired?
Since then, Cooper Flagg has managed to turn things around, putting up performances that many people expected from him when he was lighting it up with Duke.
And the rise of Ryan Nembhard as a Mavericks starter has only made things better. But there was talk that one longtime Mavericks star was contemplating retirement, only for Mark Cuban to shut it down.
Mark Cuban denies rumors of Dwight Powell retiring next season
According to Jay Appaji of Mavs Film Room, Dallas Mavericks veteran Dwight Powell is considering retiring at the end of this NBA season.
“Mavericks big man Dwight Powell is likely to retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 NBA season, league sources tell Mavs Film Room.
“Powell is currently in the final year of a 3-year, $12 million contract he signed in the summer of 2023.
“Powell, a native of Toronto, Canada, has made his home in Dallas and doesn’t desire to play elsewhere, sources tell us.
“It has long been thought that Powell will join the Mavericks organization in some capacity following his playing career, though no clarity on this exists at present moment.”
However, Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban saw this report and immediately shut it down, simply reposting the rumor with the words, “not true,” on X.
For what it’s worth, Appaji and Mavs Film Room understand why Cuban pushed back, but stand by their reporting on the matter.
Where do the Dallas Mavericks go from here?
Even without the possibility of Dwight Powell retiring from basketball, there are still a lot of questions being asked about the Dallas Mavericks and their future.
There is no clarity about what direction the franchise is headed in, with the future of Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, in particular, raising a lot of eyebrows.
Should the Toronto Raptors trade for Anthony Davis?

If the Mavericks are looking to build around the successful duo of Cooper Flagg and Ryan Nembhard, then it might be best for them to trade their high-value pieces and amass some draft picks.
Flagg and Nembhard can be similar to Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, even if Nembhard isn’t going to be an All-Star caliber talent.
The smart call for the Mavericks would be to move their star-level assets and build around these two players, along with Derick Lively II.
