Mashrafe Mortaza’s house set on fire due to political unrest in Bangladesh

The home of Mashrafe Mortaza, a former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team and a member of the ruling Awami League party, was burned down by demonstrators in Narail during the recent turmoil in the country. The protesters were upset with Mortaza for not speaking out about the reported “mass killings and large-scale arrests of students” in Bangladesh. Pictures show his house being damaged and set on fire by the protesters.

On Monday, Bangladesh was in a state of political unrest following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina due to violent protests by students against a government job quota system. The head of Bangladesh’s Army confirmed that Sheikh Hasina had resigned and that she and her sister had reportedly left the country. The Army chief stated that the military would assist in establishing a temporary government to manage Bangladesh.

Hasina came to India to find a safe place and is likely to go to Europe after arranging for a place to stay. At the same time, people protesting destroyed the Prime Minister’s home and damaged the property.

Mortaza led the Bangladesh cricket team in 117 matches in various types of games, more than anyone else from his country. During his long cricket career, he took 390 wickets in international matches and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Test matches, 220 One Day Internationals, and 54 Twenty20 Internationals.

After retiring, he got involved in politics in 2018 by joining the Awami League, led by Hasina, and won a position as a Member of Parliament from the Narail-2 area.
