Ampthill were beaten 50-12 by unbeaten League Leaders Ealing Trailfinders, following a difficult second half in which the A’s were unable to capitalise on chances.
The Mob would hope for a response after last week’s late loss to Chinnor, but it wouldn’t follow suit as the hosts opened the scoring after six minutes, David Bridge getting his first of the afternoon.
It would prove to be a tough afternoon, and this was compounded by a clear penalty try shout being ignored after a superb breakaway from Mason Cullen and a clear pull back from George Worboys, the host’s culprit sent to the bin.
Ealing would double their score for the afternoon soon after, Mike Williemse driving over from close range to score; this time it wouldn’t be converted from the fly-half George Worboys.
The hosts hadn’t lost all season, and it continued to look that way, as in the first half, they also opened the scoring in the second, Elliot Chilvers scoring over in the corner after repeated phases on the A’s defence, 17-0.
The Mob would respond instantly, both with a full raft of replacements and on the scoreboard, Efan Jones picking a delightful line to race in behind and score, Louis Grimoldby was unable to convert from out wide.
Despite the turn in favour, the hosts would yet again take control, three tries in nine minutes extended the home side’s lead to 40 points, Bridge with a brace to make his hat-trick and Worboys with his first of the contest.
The A’s thought they had closed off the high-scoring encounter as they made the most of the poor Trailfinders discipline to score from a driving maul, another replacement, Fraser Strachan, going over.
But the hosts would again react with another five points, this time Matas Jurevicius, taking the league leaders past the half-century mark, 50-12.
Speaking after the side’s defeat on Saturday afternoon, Ampthill head coach Dave Ward said, “It’s a difficult one to take for us as the travelling team, and when you play a team like this, you need quite a few things to go your way, and today they didn’t.”
Ampthill Scorers:
Tries: Jones 44, Strachan 79
Conversions: Grimoldby 79
