Max Scherzer’s role in rotation becomes critical amid Cody Ponce injury

The Toronto Blue Jays’ starting rotation has taken a hit with injuries early this season, which means that veteran Max Scherzer’s role just got more significant.

The Blue Jays already have Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios and Trey Yesavage rehabbing injuries, and now Cody Ponce joins them.

Ponce was injured on March 30 and is anticipated to miss substantial time with an ACL sprain. The Ponce injury thins out the pitching depth, leaving Scherzer with a bigger pitching load.

But if any pitcher has what it takes, it is Mad Max, who pitches with intensity, which was especially seen in the postseason last year.

Why Max Scherzer is no longer a luxury veteran

With Ponce diagnosed with a sprained ACL and expected to miss significant time, the Blue Jays’ pitching rotation is facing immediate depth issues, forcing veterans like Scherzer to shoulder a heavier load early in the season.

This is the 41-year-old’s opportunity to showcase how important his role has become. Scherzer’s health and success will be crucial in order to stabilize the rotation

But Scherzer also has a lot of passion for the Blue Jays, and his return this season showcases that. His pride, heart, hustle and experience cook up a recipe for success in the rotation
