KKR Off to a Flying Start

Kolkata Knight Riders came out attacking from ball one. Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with a smooth 67 off 40 balls, while Finn Allen smashed 37 off just 17.

The duo powered KKR to 78 for 1 in the powerplay, putting MI under early pressure. Their aggressive intent set the tone for a big total.

Raghuvanshi Shines, MI Pull Things Back

Young Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a fearless knock of 51 off 29 balls. His late hitting helped KKR cross the 220 mark, finishing at 220 for 4.

On his MI debut, Shardul Thakur made a big impact. He picked up 3 wickets for 39 runs, breaking partnerships at key moments.

Jasprit Bumrah also did well to control the scoring. He gave away only 35 runs in his 4 overs, even though wickets did not come his way.

Rohit and Rickelton Set Up the Chase

Mumbai Indians started their chase in explosive fashion. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton put on a stunning 148-run opening stand.

They reached 100 in just 8.1 overs, completely taking the game away from KKR. Rohit looked in top form, scoring 78 off 38 balls.

He reached his fifty in just 23 balls, hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes. Rickelton matched him with a powerful 81 off 43 balls, including 8 sixes.

Calm Finish Seals Historic Win

After both openers got out, there was a brief moment of tension as MI lost a few quick wickets.

However, captain Hardik Pandya stayed calm and scored an unbeaten 18 off 11 balls. Naman Dhir supported him well and finished the match in style.

Dhir hit the winning boundary off Sunil Narine, sealing the chase with five balls to spare as MI ended at 224 for 4 in 19.1 overs.

Records and Key Takeaways

This win ended Mumbai Indians’ 13-year wait for a victory in their opening IPL match, their last coming in 2012.

It was also MI’s highest successful run chase in IPL history, going past their previous best of 219.

Shardul Thakur was named Player of the Match for his crucial spell that kept KKR in check during the middle overs.
