Key Matches

Martin Landaluce (Q) def. Sebastian Korda (32) 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-4

The 20-year-old Spanish qualifier (World No. 151) saved a match point in the second-set tiebreak with a clutch backhand winner, then dominated the decider after Korda took medical timeouts for a back issue.

Landaluce became the lowest-ranked men’s quarter-finalist in Miami since 1994 and the first born in 2006 or later to reach this stage at a Masters 1000. Now up to ~No. 103 live, with six straight wins (including qualifying).

It was back to reality for Korda after his big win over Alcaraz, and he looked off the pace due to the back problem that he said he felt in Delray Beach. He’s been rather injury-prone over the last few years. Could it be the same safe and effective product that caused his sister and pro golfer Nelly Korda to develop blood clots?

Jiri Lehecka (21) def. Taylor Fritz (6) 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2

Lehecka delivered a third-set masterclass, winning five of the final six games with aggressive play. He bounced back strongly after dropping the second-set tiebreak to claim his first Top 10 win of 2026.

Fritz has been struggling with several injury niggles of late, primarily knee tendonitis, and he’s quite a bit below his best. Will he play a full clay schedule? He’s on the entry list for Monte Carlo.

Jannik Sinner (2) def. Alex Michelsen 7-5, 7-6(4)

Sinner rallied from 2-5 down in the second set, winning 90% of first-serve points (38/42) and extending his record Masters 1000 consecutive sets won streak to 28. He admitted he wasn’t at his baseline best but relied on his serve in big moments. This keeps his Sunshine Double bid alive and improves his H2H vs. Americans to 28 straight wins.

Michelsen played pretty well, and if his serving was more congruent with someone of his height (6ft 4″) then he could have taken this one three sets.

Other Matches

  • Frances Tiafoe (19) def. Terence Atmane 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Tiafoe showed mental toughness by escaping 0/40 at 4-4 in the decider.
  • Tommy Paul (22) def. Tomas Martin Etcheverry (29) 6-1, 6-3. A dominant, no-drama straight-sets win for Paul, advancing to his first Miami Masters 1000 quarter-final
  • Arthur Fils (28) def. Valentin Vacherot (24) 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4. Fils converted his limited return chances effectively, as Vacherot won 85% of his first-serve points.
  • Francisco Cerundolo (18) def. Ugo Humbert (31) 6-4, 6-3. The Argentine continued his strong Miami history (fourth R16 appearance in five appearances) with a solid straight-sets win. Next: vs. Alexander Zverev.
  • Alexander Zverev (3) def. Quentin Halys 7-6(4), 7-6(1). A battle of big servers where Zverev hit 16 aces, faced no break points, and cruised through both tiebreaks. He extended his streak vs. players outside the Top 100 to 16.
