Mitchell Marsh Returns as Australian T20I Skipper
After a three-match Test series against West Indies, Australia will play a five-match T20I series in the Caribbean Islands. A 16-member squad for the T20I series was announced by Cricket Australia today, June 4. In consideration of the T20I team, Mitchell Marsh will lead from the front. Mitchell Marsh recently had a terrific IPL season, scoring 627 runs in 13 matches at an average of 48.23 and a strike rate of 163.70.
Josh Hazlewood returned to the squad after his winning stint in the IPL 2025. In addition, Mitchell Owen, who shone in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 as the highest run scorer, got a maiden call-up for the series. Matt Kuhnemann is also included in the series. The group also features Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly, returning after recovering from their respective injuries. There is no place for Jake Fraser-McGurk and Marcus Stoinis.
Moreover, the T20I series doesn’t consist of Australian veteran cricketers Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc. The cricketers will appear for the Test series but will rest for the T20I series. George Bailey, the Australian chair of selectors, said that Australia is looking for a promising side for the T20 World Cup 2026, hosted in India and Sri Lanka. Therefore, this T20I series and combination will play a crucial role for the selectors.
