MJF Says AEW ‘Dropped The Ball’ By Not Producing Wednesday Night Wars Documentary

AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman didn’t hold back while appearing on the LNG Productions podcast, where he took a shot at his own company for what he believes was a missed opportunity tied to one of wrestling’s biggest modern rivalries.

During his appearance on the LNG Productions podcast, MJF got into a conversation about wrestling history, merchandise, and long-term business ideas. That led him to bring up the Wednesday Night Wars era — the period when AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT went head-to-head — and why he believes AEW should have already turned that rivalry into a documentary.

MJF made it clear that this wasn’t just fan talk either. He revealed that he personally pitched the idea internally and believes the company let a major opportunity slip through their fingers. While discussing missed business opportunities and potential projects AEW could produce, MJF explained that he had already brought the idea up directly to Tony Khan.

“I do think we dropped the ball in my company. The fact that we haven’t had like — and I’ve said this to Tony — I was like, we should do a Wednesday Night Wars documentary. We literally won… and we have guys that work in our company now that were on the other side. It would be sick.”

MJF also pointed out that AEW now has an advantage that didn’t exist during the actual rivalry — talent who worked through the competition from both sides. That, in his mind, would make the storytelling even stronger if the project were produced today.

He followed that up by stressing that the missed documentary idea represents more than just storytelling — it’s also about leaving potential revenue behind. After explaining why the documentary concept made sense creatively, MJF added that he believes AEW missed out financially as well.

“There’s so much money we’re leaving on the table. It’s absolutely astounding.”

The Wednesday Night Wars remain one of the defining moments of modern wrestling, with AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT battling for ratings dominance beginning in 2019. AEW eventually gained traction during the rivalry before NXT shifted nights, bringing the direct weekly competition to an end. Even now, fans continue debating the legacy of that era and how it shaped today’s wrestling landscape.

MJF has built a reputation for speaking like a businessman as much as a wrestler, and this latest comment fits right into that mold. Whether AEW ever pulls the trigger on a full Wednesday Night Wars documentary remains to be seen, but if MJF has his way, the company might still cash in on that chapter of wrestling history sooner rather than later.
