Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently shared insights into former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni’s thoughts on retirement. There has been a lot of talk about whether the famous cricketer will retire from all cricket activities after the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhoni, who led the Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL championship in 2023, had said he would play one more season for his fans, which he did in the 2024 IPL. But when Chennai didn’t make it to the playoffs, people thought Dhoni would retire.
Yet, Dhoni hasn’t made any announcement about retiring. Shami recently commented on this, saying that it’s mainly the media pushing for Dhoni’s retirement, and the player himself doesn’t seem too concerned about it.
“You media folks have been questioning his future, but he just says, ‘Dekha Jayega’ [we’ll see],” Shami mentioned during a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra.
Continuing, Shami remembered talking with Dhoni about retirement and what Dhoni thinks about when a player should retire.
“I asked Mahi bhai, ‘When should a player retire?’ He told me, ‘First, when you get bored, and second, when you feel you might get dropped from the team,’” Shami explained.
“The most important thing is that if you stop having fun playing, it means it’s time to quit. It’s better to choose the right time to retire. Your body will tell you if you can’t handle a certain type of play anymore. That’s when a player should decide to stop,” he added.
In the meantime, Mohammed Shami is recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after having surgery on his ankle. He last played for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he took the most wickets with 24. He is looking forward to getting back in shape for the important Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
