Mohammed Shami’s fitness issues to see him miss opening Ranji Trophy games: Report

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami continues his recovery from the ankle injury and thus is expected to remain sidelined for Bengal’s opening 2 Ranji Trophy fixtures according to PTI. Shami, who also underwent surgery earlier this year, has not yet regained full fitness despite last featuring for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

The veteran pacer has seemingly decided to prioritize his complete recovery before stepping back onto the field.

“If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will. What matters most is being fully ready for whatever comes next, regardless of the opposition or format,” Shami said recently, expressing his willingness to play domestic cricket.

However, for now, the Bengal team will have to navigate the early stages of the season without their premier fast bowler. While Shami’s absence is a big blow, Bengal’s squad will be bolstered by the return of Wriddhiman Saha and Sudip Chatterjee.

Sahe, who made his Bengal debut back in 2007, will be making a comeback after leaving the team in 2022 due to disagreements with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Chatterjee’s return is also expected to be a big positive for the Bengal side as the dependable top-order batter has been a consistent performer for the side and will be key to their success in the domestic tournament.
