Mohammed Shami is likely to be recalled for India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11 in Vadodara, according to an NDTV-based report. The senior pacer has impressed selectors with strong domestic white-ball performances.
Shami, now 35, has been out of India’s ODI plans since the Champions Trophy final in March. Despite that, his recent form has put him back in the frame during a phase of rotation in the pace attack.
He picked up six wickets in three matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and followed it up with 16 wickets in seven games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Those numbers have stood out at a time when India are closely managing their fast bowlers.
One spell in particular has caught the selectors’ eye. Shami returned figures of 2 for 14 in six overs, including two maidens, against Jammu and Kashmir in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, bowling them out for just 63.
This possible comeback comes as a surprise to some, given Shami was left out of the ODI setup after the 2025 Champions Trophy. He still finished that tournament with nine wickets, the joint-most for India, showing his continued impact.
A BCCI insider said selectors still see Shami as a reliable wicket-taker, especially in the middle overs. At the same time, they are cautious about his fitness and want to be sure his body can handle international demands.
“He is not out of reckoning. The only concern is fitness. Do not be surprised if he is picked for the New Zealand series, given his ability. Even the 2027 World Cup is a possibility,” the source said.
Jasprit Bumrah Rest Opens Door for Mohammed Shami
India are expected to rest Jasprit Bumrah from the New Zealand ODIs as part of workload management. Bumrah has already missed recent ODI series against Australia and South Africa and is being preserved for the T20 World Cup.
With Bumrah likely unavailable, Shami could lead the pace attack if selected. His experience and control make him a strong option in a relatively young bowling group.
Shami also holds India’s record for most wickets in white-ball ICC tournaments, which further strengthens his case. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still some distance away, selectors appear open to using experienced players smartly during this cycle.
The New Zealand series could therefore mark an important step in Shami’s return to India’s ODI plans, provided he clears the fitness checks and stays injury-free.
