Ugo Humbert defeated fellow Frenchman and 17-year-old wildcard Moise Kouame in straight sets. The World No. 34 advanced comfortably and will face second seed Jannik Sinner in the second round. Neither player’s best surface is clay, but it’s hard to see Humbert troubling Sinner.
Alejandro Tabilo def. Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-3
Alejandro Tabilo made a solid return to Monte-Carlo, the site of his big 2025 run. The Chilean beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in straight sets and will next play either Jiri Lehecka or qualifier Emilio Nava.
Gael Monfils def. Tallon Griekspoor 6-7(7) 6-1 6-4
In the standout match and story of Day 1, 39-year-old wild card Gael Monfils fought past Tallon Griekspoor in three sets. This victory marked Monfils’ 13th and final appearance at Monte-Carlo, where he became the oldest match winner since 1973 and moved into first place among French players for most Masters 1000 wins (145). Monfils will face eighth seed Alexander Bublik next.
Cameron Norrie def. Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2 4-6 7-6(0)
Cameron Norrie snapped a five-match losing streak at the event with a gritty three-set win over Miomir Kecmanovic.
After losing the second set, Norrie dominated the final tiebreak 7-0. He will take on fifth seed Alex de Minaur in the second round (Norrie leads their H2H 3-2).
