More of the Same, Can He Breakthrough?

Karen Khachanov finished the 2024 season ranked No. 19 in the world. He finished 2025 at No. 18, winning just over $2.9 million; in 2024, he won just under $2.9 million.

This decade, Khachanov has never won more than 37 matches and never fewer than 32. The 29-year-old’s 2025 season showed he is a similar player to what he has been for years.

Karen Khachanov 2025 Season Review

Consistency

At 29 years old, Khachanov continues to show the form that makes him a Top 20 player, but not an exceptional one. While not a super-star, he proves himself year in and year out. The Russian has reached exactly one ATP Tour-level final in four of the last five years. A mini breakout in 2024 brought him to three separate finals, including his previous Tour-level Championship at the Almaty Open.

Likewise, Khachanov’s play at the Grand Slams remained steady. For the third time in his professional career, he netted a 9-4 record in singles play at the Grand Slams. His highlight was reaching the quarters at Wimbledon before losing to Taylor Fritz. He did not get out of the Round of 32 in the other three Grand Slams.

Highlight and Lowlight

By far, Khachanov’s best 2025 showing came at the ATP 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto. Khachanov knocked off then World No. 13 Casper Ruud and World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, reaching his only final of the year. He narrowly lost the final in a third-set tiebreaker to Ben Shelton, but it was still a great tournament.

While his run in Canada was exceptional, for most of the year, Khachanov struggled against the top players. Outside of Toronto, the Russian squared off against the Top 20 players 10 times in 2025. He lost all 10. This relative inability to raise his level against the world’s best brought him back to No. 18 at the end of 2025, just about where he started the year.

Ready for 2026?

Karen Khachanov reached his career-high world ranking of No. 8 in 2019. Since then, he’s hovered in the high teens for almost all of his career. He will turn 30 in May of 2026. He’s had a solid career. His time for a bigger breakthrough may be running out. Time will tell, though there’s not much time to wait.
