More changes may be on the horizon for WWE’s creative team following the recent departure of Brian “Road Dogg” James from the company’s writing staff.
James had been working behind the scenes for years, most recently as part of the SmackDown creative team. His exit sparked questions about whether additional restructuring was taking place within WWE’s creative departments.
During Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez discussed the situation and noted that Road Dogg’s responsibilities had already shifted months before he ultimately stepped away from the company.
“Then I think it was like last summer. He wasn’t like, taken off creative, but maybe a restructuring and, and somebody else kind of took over.”
The shakeup has also included promotions within WWE’s writing team. Alvarez confirmed that longtime staff member Alexandra Williams has been elevated into a major leadership role within the company.
“WWE has a new lead writer, Alexandra Williams, posted Wednesday. She has been promoted to Vice President as well as lead writer of Raw. Williams has been with WWE since October 2020 starting as a writer and producer for Raw, getting a promotion as senior writer and producer February 2024, she is now the lead writer for Raw.”
According to Alvarez, Road Dogg’s departure appears to be part of a broader shift affecting both of WWE’s flagship weekly shows.
“Basically, what’s happened here is we’ve got a creative shake up on Raw and SmackDown. And it was hinted to me that it’s possible there is more to come.”
Alvarez also pointed out that WWE creative has recently been dealing with multiple injuries to key performers, which disrupted some of the company’s original WrestleMania plans. Those plans reportedly changed after several major injuries occurred.
“I’ll say this… Has the creative been great of late? It is not. Are there some reasons for that? Well, of course there is… one of the biggest things that was going to happen at WrestleMania was Bron Breakker beating CM Punk for the title and the elevation of Bron Breakker.”
“And obviously Bron Breakker got hurt after Seth Rollins got hurt, Bronson Reed then got hurt.”
With Road Dogg already stepping away and leadership roles shifting within WWE’s writing team, the possibility of additional moves suggests the company’s creative structure could continue evolving in the coming weeks.
