Motion Motorsport Report for InsideTrackNews.com – March 30, 2026
Dave Mathers

This is a ‘triple’ edition of Dave Mathers’ Motion Motorsport Report for InsideTrackNews.com. We’ll be getting things back on track for weekly posts now that the 2026 Motorama show is in the rearview mirror. Thanks to Dave and the readers for your patience and understanding!!

March 30 2026

A couple of weeks ago, I visited two London-area ‘body builders.’ My first stop was at the long-running Performance Fiberglass, in front of Delaware Speedway, started by CASCAR creator Tony Novotny about four decades ago and now operated by Ravi Mahadeo. They continue to build bodies for NASCAR Canada and other series, as well as other specialty projects. But, ironically, in spite of being on the same property that is the home base for the APC Series, they do not supply bodies for the APC cars.

Our second stop was at the all-new, state-of-the-art Strathroy facility of Cynergy Composites, started and owned by carbon fiber guru Tim Hodgins. That shop builds bodies and components for Pro Mod drag racers, as well as parts for several OEMs including GM (COPO hoods, etc.), Shelby and even Tesla. There ‘may’ even be some top-secret projects underway as well!! The quality of work was incredible. I should note that Tim worked at Motion over thirty years ago as a co-op student in the sales department, service, heavy truck and body shop. He tells me he learned a lot during that time. Good to hear.

The latest book by noted Canadian motorsports author Tim Sykes, ‘The Flag Start Years: Kohler Dragway 1955 to 1963′ is now available from Amazon Canada for only $47.85. I have mine. Grab yours before they are gone.

NASCAR Cup – Denny Hamlin (Toyota) won the pole at Martinsville over William Byron (Chev) and Josh Berry (Ford). 37 cars including 18 Chevs, 10 Fords and 9 Toyotas.

Amazing!! The first stage ran caution-free and Hamlin got the stage win. A lot of bets were probably lost with that result!! The first race caution came out on lap 103 when Noah Gragson got spun by A.J. Allmendinger, although it wasn’t really Dinger’s fault.

One of them there racin’ deals!! Hamlin also won Stage 2. On lap 314 the second race caution came out for debris on the track – a chunk of brake rotor. Just after the restart Bubba Wallace ‘bump drafted’ Carson Hocevar. A lap and a half later Wallace did it again and collected a bunch of cars. There were twelve involved.

Hard to believe but they ran caution-free to the very end. Lots of rubbing and shoving but no more yellows. And they said it couldn’t be done!! At the flag it was Chase Elliott over Hamlin and Joey Logano. Chev/Toyota/Ford!!

In the points Tyler Reddick leads Ryan Blaney by 82 and Hamlin by 94.

Next race – Bristol, Sunday, April 12 at 3 P.M. on TSN 3. (Fox lists TBA from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M.!!!!)

NASCAR O’Reilly Series: In qualifying points leader Justin Allgaier nabbed the pole over Rajah Caruth (both in Chevs) and Brandon Jones (Toyota). 40 cars timed for the 38 starting spots, 30 Chevs, 2 Fords and 6 Toyotas. The first yellow came out on lap 33 when Lavar Scott and Luke Baldwin got together in 3 with Baldwin hitting the wall. The second yellow came out on lap 57 when Garrett Smithley went into the spin cycle in 4. Allgaier won Stage One. The caution came back out on lap 88 for fluid on the track. That fluid may have come from the car of Jeremy Clements that had been smoking earlier. The yellow came back out on lap 106 for debris on the track up in corner 3. Austin Hill, who started way back in 26th, got the Stage Two win.

Rajah Caruth led at halfway over Harrison Burton and Corey Day. The caution came back out on lap 135 when Parker Retzlaff looped it after contact with Patrick Staropoli. Ten laps later Kyle Sieg and Staropoli got together for yet another yellow. On lap 182 Ryan Ellis had a solo spin in 2. Wow, yellow fever!! On lap 197 Smithley and Brad Perez got together in 4. Twenty laps later Sanchez got in trouble in 4. Right after the restart Ross Chastain got in trouble on the back stretch, swapping ends then keeping going. Yellow. On the restart IT happened!! To quote the announcers the front stretch was a parking lot. More than half the field all wadded up!! Who to blame? Anybody’s guess!!

I’m going with outside pole restarter and short track hot shoe Lee Pulliam – missed shift? RED flag!! But the wrecks weren’t over. Oh no!! More to come!! On the restart William Sawalich spun on the back stretch. Yellow!! And, of course, the yellow came out on the last lap but so did the checker. Brent Crews and Caruth got together. At the flag it was pole sitter and points leader Allgaier, who has won three of the first four races, over Day and Sammy Smith.

In the points Allgaier leads Jesse Love by 92 and Sheldon Creed by 116.

Next race – Rockingham, Saturday at 2:30 P.M. on USA.

NASCAR Craftsman Trucks: Next race – Rockingham, Friday – tape-delayed to Saturday at 4:30 P.M. on CTV Speed.

Formula One in Japan George Russell (Mercedes) led the pack in P1, Oscar Piastri (McLaren) was quickest in P2 and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) was tops in P3. In Q1 Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was quickest. In Q2 and Q3 Antonelli topped the charts with teammate George Russell starting 2nd and Oscar Piastri 3rd in his resurgent McLaren. The two Aston Martins started 21st (Alonso) and 22nd (Stroll) while the two Caddys started 19th (Perez) and 20th (Bottas). The previously dominant Red Bulls have not yet warmed to the new regulations and started 8th (Hadjar) and 11th (Verstappen).

Wow, now THAT’s the way to play the Japanese National Anthem!!! Drums, guitars and violins! VERY well done, VERY enthusiastic and VERY powerful.
Another EXCITING start to an F1 race!! Ya gotta love it. Piastri started 3rd and had the lead by the first corner, with Leclerc, who started 4th, right behind him.

Pole sitter Antonelli dropped back to 5th on the start after he appeared to spin his tires. Russell finally got into the lead on lap 9 and then Piastri got back around to retake the top spot. Good stuff!! The safety car was deployed on lap 23 when Liam Lawson stuffed it into the tire wall at speed!! He appeared to have injured his right leg in the impact. At the halfway mark (under caution) it was Antonelli over Piastri and Russell. It was funny to see the Mercedes pace car with its tongue hanging out as the race cars were just off idle!! Things went smoothly to the end with the nineteen-year-old pole sitter Antonelli nabbing the win over Piastri and Leclerc.

In the Drivers’ Championship Antonelli now leads Russell by 9 and Leclerc by 23. In the Constructors’ Championship Mercedes leads Ferrari by 45 and McLaren by 89.

Next race – Miami May 3. (Bahrain and Saudi Arabia ‘delayed’ due to Iran war).

IndyCar – in qualifying for the race at the beautiful Barber Motorsports Park Alex Palou took the pole over David Malukas and Graham Rahal. 25 cars. Scott McLaughlin had a serious off into the wall in practice but got back out for qualifying (he started 14th).

Things ran very smoothly with no cautions up to the halfway mark where it was Rahal over Christian Lundgaard and Palou. At the checker it was Palou over Lundgaard and Rahal. How refreshing to see a caution-free race that had lots of passing but no incidents.

In the points Kyle Kirkwood leads Palou by 2 and Lundgaard by 35.

MARCH 24, 2026

I have both kudos and brickbats for CTV. Kudos for picking up the ball and running with it by filling the HUGE gap created by TSN, which dropped coverage of the previous two NASCAR Cup races. Putting it on their CTV2 stations was VERY well received by the racing masses. Brickbats to the new CTV Speed channel for tape-delaying the NASCAR Truck races by one full day. With the internet, everybody already knows who won the race, so what audience are you broadcasting to? And allowing Rogers to identify that broadcast as ‘new’ is obfuscation at its very worst!!

It was interesting to see the first heads-up battle between NHRA and the new IHRA. I counted the number of entries in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Mod, Pro Stock, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, and Stock. The total, you ask? NHRA had 170 entries and IHRA had 167. Hopefully, these two organizations will put their egos on the trailer and work together going forward. No head-to-head events!!!! That will definitely improve the number of entries for both sanctioning bodies, and the sport of drag racing will grow exponentially.

It’s safe to say that Max Verstappen isn’t a fan of the new F1 regulations. Photo by Pirelli Media.

Max Verstappen has been whining non-stop about the new F1 cars this year. His view is completely at odds with F1 fans, who are ecstatic about the dramatically increased incidents of passing this year. His comment that those fans “don’t know what racing is about” defies logic.

Could it be that Red Bull hasn’t given him a competitive chassis? He has had a couple of fastest laps, so it must be the car. We have heard his mewlings in the past, so maybe it’s time for Max (and Jos) to ‘exit stage left’!!

NASCAR Cup – Tyler Reddick continued his strong start this season by winning the pole for the race at Darlington Raceway in front of teammate Bubba Wallace (both in Toyotas) and Chase Elliott (Chev). 37 cars: 17 Chevs, 11 Fords, and 9 Toyotas. Insert your own joke(s) here about how one of the two teams that sued NASCAR is having such a VERY stout start to the year!!

Stage One went clean and green, and Brad Keselowski took the stage win. The first race caution came out on lap 113 when Eric Jones got hit by Denny Hamlin entering corner 3, when Jones appeared to lift for some reason. Also involved was Bubba Wallace. On lap 180, Hamlin appeared to have slapped the wall but kept going. Keselowski also won Stage Two.

How cool was it to hear the background music around lap 190 – Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’? On lap 197, Riley Herbst spun off 4 and spanked the inside wall. Race caution number two. How long have the backstretch stands been closed there? We were there in 1985 when Bill Elliott won the Winston Million (I still have one ‘Million Dollar Bill’), and the track has switched sides since then. Corner four is now corner two, where the cars get the famous ‘Darlington Stripe,’ where the wall sticks out a little bit.

At the flag, it was pole sitter Reddick over Keselowski and Ryan Blaney. The video of Reddick’s baby girl smiling at him after the win was EPIC!!

In the points, Reddick now leads Blaney by 95 and by 120 over Wallace.

Next race – Martinsville, Sunday at 3:30 P.M. (No TV showing!!!!).

NASCAR O’Reilly Series – Kyle Larson (Chev), continuing his Las Vegas win, nabbed the pole for the race at Darlington Raceway in front of Christopher Bell (Toyota) and Carson Kvapil (Chev). Canadian Alex Labbe (Chev) started 34th.

It appears that NASCAR has outsourced its Live Timing feature to some offshore third-world country. Nothing else can explain why the Live Timing was not activated until after the end of the first stage. It used to be so reliable. Sad. Larson won both the first and second stages, and there were no yellow flags in either stage. The first race caution came out on lap 122 when Dean Thompson tapped Kyle Sieg on corner two exit and Sieg spun. Several other cars got involved, including Labbe, Austin Hill, Taylor Gray, and Lavar Scott.

At the flag, it was Justin Allgaier ahead of Brandon Jones and Bell. Labbe finished 38th. A good race that was devoid of the many expected ‘incidents.’ Well done.

In the points, Allgaier leads Jesse Love by 52 and Kvapil by 84.

NASCAR Craftsman Trucks – Kaden Honeycutt (Toyota) picked up the pole for the race at Darlington over Carson Hocevar (Chev) and Tanner Gray (Toyota). 36 trucks qualified: 13 Chevs, 9 Fords, 9 Toyotas, and 5 Rams. Canadians Stewart Friesen (Toyota) and Cole Butcher (Ford) qualified 13th and 17th.

The first yellow came out at lap 3 when Ben Rhodes got into the wall after a tire went down. On lap 14, William Sawalich spun in Turn 1 but was able to keep it off the walls for the second caution. Christian Eckes won Stage One. The yellow came back out on lap 57 for debris on the track. Pole sitter Honeycutt won Stage Two. The third race caution came out on lap 105 when Connor Jones appeared to lose power on corner 4 exit. Another yellow on lap 120 when Ty Majeski and Layne Riggs tangled in Turn 1 while running in the top 10. With five laps to go, Hocevar spanked the wall in Turn 1 and spun for the fifth race caution.

At the flag, it was Corey Heim over Ross Chastain and Eckes. Friesen finished 25th and Butcher was 28th. In the points, Chandler Smith leads Honeycutt by 33 and Riggs by 41. Friesen sits 13th and Butcher is 20th, second in the Rookie of the Year race.

Next race – Rockingham, Friday, April 3.

IMSA – in qualifying for the Twelve Hours of Sebring, a Caddy out-qualified the favoured Penske Porsches in GTP. The Aitken/Bamber/Vesti car won the pole over an Acura and another Caddy. The first Penske car started 4th. In LMP2, the team of Goikhberg/Thompson/Tincknell topped the class. In PRO, the Lexus of Hawksworth/Barnicoat/Kirkwood topped a Mercedes and a BMW. In GTD, the Aston Martin of Gamble/Barrichello/Robichon topped, similar to PRO, a Mercedes and a BMW. 53 cars started, including 11 GTP, 12 LMP2, 13 PRO, and 17 GTD. The Pfaff Motorsports Lambo started 13th in PRO.

The first caution came out forty minutes in when a big chunk of carbon fibre ended up on the track. The yellow came back out just before the two-hour mark when two cars, a Ferrari and a Vette, got together on the short straight at Turn 2. Just before the three-hour mark, two GTD cars got together for another yellow – the Guidi Ferrari and the Ward Mercedes. At the 3-hour and forty-minute mark, the safety car came back out for, once again, a piece of carbon fibre on the track. About an hour later, the Iribe Ferrari GTD car spun, and then in a moment of brain fade, he pulled back onto the track, collecting the back of the Wittmann Porsche.

At the halfway mark, it was Felipe Nasr in the Penske Porsche in GTP, Dane Cameron in P2, Nick Tandy in the Porsche in PRO, and Charlie Eastwood in the Vette in GTD.

Just after the halfway mark, the audience was “treated” to a really lengthy discussion, complete with guest “expert,” about “how to prepare a proper cup of tea”!! One would almost think that the announcers were British. What’s that you say, they are? Who knew?

Just before the eight-hour mark, Kyle Kirkwood lost the left front wheel in the PRO Lexus, resulting in a full-course yellow. With less than two hours to go, the P2 car of Tincknell lost a wheel, bringing out another full-course yellow. Just after the restart, the Altzman GTD Mustang crashed after getting off the track, then bouncing across to the other side. With half an hour to go, the yellow came back out when the Pera GTD Porsche spun and slid off track. The green came back out with fifteen minutes to go, and they ran cleanly to the flag.

The two Penske Porsches dominated and finished 1–2 in GTP, with the Caddy of Ricky Taylor 3rd. In P2, the Jensen team won. Porsche had a great day with a 1st and 2nd in PRO, the teams of Preining and King. The Catsburg Vette was 3rd. The Fuoco GTD Ferrari got around the Gamble Aston Martin at the end, with the Ilott Porsche 3rd.

Next race – Long Beach, April 18.

24 Hours of Le Mans – Sat., June 14 & Sun., June 15.

NHRA – Phoenix

Top Fuel – Doug Kalitta won the Top Fuel Challenge, running a 3.924 at 308.64 to top Antron Brown. Shawn Langdon topped the 15 entries with a 3.783 at 331.36. Langdon went on to take out number two qualifier Leah Pruett with a 3.877 at 325.45. 2 upsets (lower-qualified car wins) and 5 smokers (one or both cars lost traction).

Funny Car – OH CANADA – Stratford’s Spencer Hyde qualified number one in Jim Head’s flopper with a 3.979 at 317.64. 17 entries. J.R. Todd won the Funny Car Challenge, putting down a 4.196 at 282.42 to top a spinning Jordan Vandergriff. Unfortunately, Hyde spun the tires in the final and lost to Ron Capps, who put down a 4.124 at 303.23. 4 upsets and 7 smokers.

Pro Mod – Lyle Barnett topped the 17 entries with a 5.720 at 251.58. B.C. racer Justin Bond was second. OH CANADA!!! Bond takes the win, running a 5.736 at 251.81 over a red-lighting Stevie ‘Fast’ Jackson. 5 upsets and 4 smokers.

Pro Stock – Dallas Glenn won the Pro Stock Challenge with a 6.608 at 207.62 to beat Erica Enders. Greg Anderson topped the Camaro Stock – oops, Pro Stock class – with a 6.532 at 208.26. Canadians Eric and Matt Latino qualified 9th and 11th. 20 entries. Glenn won the final over Cody Coughlin with a 6.627 at 206.39. 6 upsets and 1 smoker.

Next race – Pomona, April 12.

IHRA – the first National Event of the season took place at Benson, North Carolina.

Top Fuel – Jasmine Salinas topped the 8 cars with a 3.004 at 285.59 over the 1/8-mile. In the final, Gary Pritchett took out a tire-smoking Salinas with a 3.080 at 274.00. 1 upset (lower-qualified car wins) and 2 smokers (one or both cars had traction problems).

Funny Car – Del Worsham topped the 10 entries vying for the 8-car field, putting down a run of 3.202 at 282.13. In the final, Dale Creasy took an easy drive down the track with a 13.567 at 52.35 after Terry Haddock broke. 4 upsets and 1 smoker.

Pro Mod – Jason Harris was quickest of the all-run 26 cars with a 3.543 at 211.59. Peter Norton put down a 3.567 at 210.31 in the Round Five final to beat Jason Harris. 7 upsets and 2 smokers.

Pro Stock – Tony Scott topped the six entries in what is basically Factory Stock with a 4.903 at 144.00. Scott put down a 5.069 at 140.74 to defeat Jason Dietsch in the final. No upsets.

MARCH 18, 2026

For the first time in over forty years, a NASCAR Cup race (Las Vegas) was NOT aired in Canada, and NASCAR should be ashamed for disrespecting ALL the loyal Canadian fans.

Fox’s promises to fully cover NASCAR have clearly fallen aside. It appears that it was MUCH more important to broadcast FOUR hours of the Bassmaster Classic. Wow.

Fox stated that the race would be covered on Fox Sports One and FOX ONE, two channels unavailable in Canada. However, in an omen of the impending apocalypse, the race IS available on TSN+.

Because I already have TSN, I only had to pay $8.00 for one month. There must be a Canadian company out there that would like to step up and guarantee that the races are aired on ‘real’ TV. That company would really impress a whole bunch of Canadian NASCAR fans.

Canada Heads Up head Ian Hill made a really cool announcement at Motorama, which is great news for Ontario drag racing fans. He is running a five-race Pro Mod series with races at both Toronto Motorsports Park and Grand Bend Motorplex. The purse will be $100,000 over the five races, and he has already signed up four racers, with a total of twelve interested. Good news.

NASCAR Cup – Christopher Bell took the pole over Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs (all in Toyotas). 36 cars: 17 Chevs, 10 Fords, and 9 Toyotas.

Stage One went, surprisingly, clean and green with close racing but no cautions. Bell took the stage win. Stage Two went caution-free as well, with William Byron picking up the stage win.

The first race caution came out at lap 210 when Connor Zilisch spun on corner 4 exit and went down the track. Zilisch had a similar incident in the O’Reilly race Saturday. Trying too hard?

At the checker, it was Denny Hamlin over Chase Elliott and Byron. One caution flag at Vegas? Awesome!!

In the points, Tyler Reddick still leads and has a 61-point edge on Bubba Wallace and 67 points on Ryan Blaney.

NASCAR O’Reilly Series – Sam Mayer grabbed the pole at Vegas ahead of Kyle Larson and Sheldon Creed (all in Chevs). 41 cars timed for the 38 spots: 29 Chevs, 3 Fords, and 6 Toyotas.

Well, that didn’t take long. Lap 2 and Connor Zilisch slid up and spun Jeremy Clements for the first caution. On lap 14, Cole Custer swapped ends off 2, bringing out the second caution. Justin Allgaier won Stage One. On lap 48, Sam Mayer appeared to lose engine power and slowed from up front. Yellow. Allgaier also won Stage Two. On lap 117, Dean Thompson spun down onto the median after contact with Patrick Staropoli. Race caution #4. On lap 131, Staropoli got together with Josh Bilicki, with both spinning. On lap 148, Sheldon Creed got bumped by Taylor Gray while running 2nd and 3rd, and Gray got the worst of it as he got up into the wall. Yellow. The race went green all the way to the flag after that, with Kyle Larson getting the win over Chase Briscoe and Creed.

In the points, Allgaier leads Jesse Love by 13 and Austin Hill by 29.

Formula One – the series dropped into the really cool track in Shanghai, and George Russell (Mercedes) topped P1, Q1, Q2, and Q3 for the Sprint Shootout race. In that race, his teammate Kimi Antonelli started 2nd, with Lando Norris (McLaren) 3rd. Alex Albon (Williams) was forced to start the race from pit road. Antonelli had a brutal start, falling all the way back to 7th on the initial start. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) came from 4th and quickly grabbed the lead. He and Russell swapped the lead up front several times, with Russell finally getting around for good. Great stuff!! At the halfway mark, it was Russell over Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Hamilton. On lap 13, Nico Hulkenberg’s Audi rolled to a stop at the end of the front straight and had to be forklifted back to the pits. At the flag, it was Russell over Leclerc and Hamilton.

Action from the F1 Sprint race in China. Photo by Pirelli Media.

In qualifying for the main race, Leclerc was tops in Q1, with Kimi Antonelli tops in Q2 and Q3, and he became the youngest F1 pole sitter over Russell and Hamilton. Russell sat 10th with one minute to go after an ‘off’ damaged his car. He put down a good run to qualify 2nd.

Drama right before the start as both McLarens were still in the garage up on jack stands as the formation lap began. They would both start DFL behind the Caddys and the Aston Martins!! Alex Albon (Williams) and Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) were also out. And the yellow came out almost immediately as Sergio Perez spun his Caddy. And, as in the Sprint race, it was a Ferrari out front – Hamilton. Russell was back to 4th on the first lap. Wow, passing in F1? Who knew? The yellow came back out on lap 10 when Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin rolled to a stop on track in Turn 1. Full safety car. It took four laps to remove the car!! At the halfway mark, it was Antonelli over Leclerc and Russell, AND the yellow came back out when Arvid Lindblad’s RB swapped ends on corner exit. And it was getting quite foggy (or was it smog?). A quick yellow came out on lap 33 when Ocon got together with Haas teammate Oliver Bearman, but both kept going, albeit with some minor damage. They ran clean to the flag and finished how they started – Antonelli over Russell and Hamilton.

Kimi Antonelli broke through to F1’s victory lane, in China. Photo by Pirelli Media.

I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall in the McLaren boardroom Monday morning, as neither car finished the race. Quite a comedown for last year’s dominant team.

In the Drivers’ Championship, Russell leads Antonelli by 4, Leclerc by 17, and Hamilton by 18.

In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes has a 31-point lead over Ferrari and an 80-point lead on McLaren.

IndyCar – in qualifying for the inaugural race at Arlington, Texas, Marcus Ericsson won the pole over Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward. 25 cars. The drivers reportedly “were delighted” by the layout of the track. Interestingly, the start of the race was moved up one hour in an effort “to avoid the arrival of high winds in the region.” For a street course, this circuit is very impressive. When is the last time you saw IndyCars run three-wide on a street course? This one had three-wides in spades!! Surprisingly, the cars did not experience any major issues, and at the halfway mark it was Felix Rosenqvist over Will Power and Alex Rossi. However, the green flag running came to an end on lap 66 when Christian Rasmussen stopped on track just past pit out. Caution. The green came back out with just over one lap to go. And, of course, yellows breed cautions, and two cars got together – Romain Grosjean and Nolan Siegel – allowing the race to end under caution. No NASCAR green/white/checker!! At the flag, it was Kyle Kirkwood over Palou and Power. Fun race!!
