MS Dhoni can Play for CSK, But at 66 per cent Pay Cut in IPL 2025

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the player regulations for the 2025 season of Indian Premier League (IPL). These regulations stated the guidelines for mega auction, which is set to take place in November.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was relieved to hear about this news as CSK was mainly worried if they should keep MS Dhoni. Dhoni had earlier stated that his future in competition depended solely on the retention rules.

“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” Dhoni had said.

Though, the BCCI had re-established the ‘uncapped player’ rule, which was previously eliminated after 2021. As it is stated in the IPL statement, “a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only.”

The Governing Council of the IPL met in Bengaluru and reappointed the rule after a discussion at the headquarters of BCCI in the presence of the ten franchises. Following his resignation as captain before the 2024 season, CSK paid INR 12 crore in order to keep Dhoni on the board. A source stated that Dhoni has a current salary of INR 4 crore, which is a decrease of 66.67 per cent.
