Former Indian team leader and Chennai Super Kings player MS Dhoni mentioned at a recent gathering that he is still considering his options regarding a possible exit from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni stated that his decision to retire will be based on what is best for CSK, a team he feels strongly connected to, and will also consider the new player retention rules. Dhoni has played a key role for the team and has even guided them to a shared record of five IPL championships.
The discussion about Dhoni’s retirement began when he gave up his captain position for CSK before the IPL 2024 season and let Ruturaj Gaikwad take over. After CSK won their fifth IPL title in 2023, cricket fans in India were already expecting the 2024 season to be Dhoni’s final one. But Dhoni hasn’t confirmed any specific plans about his retirement yet, and it seems possible that he might play another season as “Thala” in 2025.
“There’s still plenty of time for the teams and the people in charge to figure out the rules about keeping players and everything else. Once they decide all that, we’ll make our choice. So, we don’t have control over this yet. When the rules are set, we’ll be able to make a decision…In the end, we need to choose what’s best for CSK, and that’s our main goal,” Dhoni mentioned at an event.
With Ruturaj as the captain, CSK didn’t make it to the IPL 2024 playoffs, but that didn’t lessen the praise for the 27-year-old’s first time leading the team. Dhoni was often seen offering advice to Ruturaj during games, which has increased the excitement about Ruturaj potentially being the team’s long-term captain.
