Fans of MS Dhoni can breathe easy. The former India captain will be part of Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2026. However, he may not play every league match this season.
A senior CSK source confirmed that Dhoni is set to arrive in Chennai soon. “We can confirm that he is coming to Chennai for the new season of the IPL,” the source told PTI.
At the same time, the franchise made it clear that his availability for all matches is not certain. “Whether he will be available for all the games or not is something we can’t confirm at the moment,” the source added.
Dhoni has been dealing with knee and back issues in recent years. His running between the wickets has also been limited, and he has often avoided long spells on the field.
In the last two IPL seasons, Dhoni mostly played short cameos with the bat. He was often used as an Impact Player, coming in for quick runs at the end rather than batting through the middle overs.
With the presence of Sanju Samson and other wicketkeeping options in the squad, CSK have the flexibility to rest Dhoni when needed. Samson is expected to take over the gloves in matches where Dhoni sits out.
The Impact Player rule has made this plan easier. It allows teams to use experienced players like Dhoni in limited roles, without putting too much pressure on their fitness.
Despite the managed role, Dhoni is still expected to feature in most of CSK’s home games at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. The Chepauk crowd remains deeply attached to their “Thala,” and his presence lifts the team’s energy.
For CSK, this looks like a smart balance between emotion and practicality. They want Dhoni’s leadership and calmness, but they also understand the need to protect his body.
As IPL 2026 approaches, one thing is clear. Dhoni will still wear the yellow jersey. But fans may need to get used to seeing him in a carefully managed role rather than every single game.
