MULTIPLE WWE TITLE CHANGES! – Several New Champions Crowned On NXT

Tonight’s episode of WWE NXT was packed with four championships on the line, and three of them actually saw new champions being crowned. The Vanity Project’s Swipe Right duo of Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes scored an upset over DarkState’s Saquon Shugars and Osiris Griffin to capture the NXT Tag Team Championship, while Elio LeFleur defeated both Eli Knight and WWE Speed Champion Jasper Troy to win that title in a Triple Threat match, and Myles Borne finished the night toppling Ethan Page to win the NXT North American Championship.

How did this go down tonight, what led to this, and what could be on the horizon? Let’s break it all down!

How We Got Here:

The Vanity Project earned their title shot by beating The Culling, Hank Walker & Tank Ledger, and OTM in a Fatal 4-Way No. 1 contenders’ match last week, while Elio LeFleur and Eli Knight had fought to a time limit draw in their WWE Speed title contender’s bout to set up that Triple Threat. Borne had attacked Page and forced him to agree to the title match after weeks of being told by Page that he needed to find his edge.

Match Details:

Swipe Right were being tossed around by the much bigger Griffin and Shugars, who were making this a joke for the first bit of the match. Eventually, though, Jackson Drake got involved and started to distract the rest of DarkState at ringside, causing enough of a distraction that the referee didn’t notice Tony D’Angelo going on the attack to give the edge to Baylor and Smokes.

Regarding the WWE Speed Championship, LeFleur was able to score the pin over Troy while Knight was just one second too late to be able to break up the pin, after those two double-teamed the bigger Troy and LeFleur was able to capitalize, as seen here:

In the main event, Page was about to retain the title through dubious means with The Vanity Project helping him out again, only for Hank Walker, Tank Ledger, and Shiloh Hill to run out to fight with them and stop them from interfering like they had done in Hill’s match last week against Page. Ricky Saints then also tried to help, but Joe Hendry went after him, once again balancing things to an even playing field and giving Borne the chance to turn things around and win his first title in WWE.

Personal Reactions & What Happens Next?:

All are great ideas, in my mind. Tony D’Angelo said he would cost DarkState everything and gets to continue that story, while a fresh new tag team holds those titles. Troy didn’t do too much with the WWE Speed Championship, but it did give him something to hold for a while, and now that he’s lost it, he can move on to having non-Speed matches, while LeFleur can get some of the spotlight for himself and have some impressive quick bouts. Knight didn’t look bad in his loss, either, which should put him in contention for a future title opportunity in singles fashion. And while Page was just shy of breaking the record for the longest title reign, he still made his mark and helped push Borne to the next level. Let’s see what Borne can do with the belt, and Page can move on to feud with Joe Hendry soon, I’m sure.
