Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate are set to travel to Sri Lanka as part of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff for India’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka. Although an official confirmation from the BCCI is still awaited, both Nayar and ten Doeschate are expected to join the team soon.
Background and Roles
Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate previously worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) under Gambhir’s mentorship. Nayar will board the flight to Colombo with the Indian team members on July 22, while ten Doeschate is likely to join the team directly in Colombo. Both will serve as assistant coaches for the tour.
Coaching Staff Changes
This tour marks the first instance of two assistant coaches in Indian cricket’s setup, as confirmed by a source to Hindustan Times. The addition of Nayar and ten Doeschate leaves KKR with head coach Chandrakant Pandit and bowling coach Bharat Arun before next year’s mega auction.
Fielding Coach Continuity
T Dilip will continue as the fielding coach for Team India. His performance has been well-received, and Gambhir supports his continued role. Dilip is the only member of Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff to get a second term.
Bowling Coach Uncertainty
The position of the bowling coach remains undecided. Gambhir has recommended former South African pacer Morne Morkel. The BCCI has contacted Morkel, currently in Australia, and is considering Troy Cooley, a former Australian and NCA coach, as a potential stop-gap option for the Sri Lanka tour.
